Steam Locomotive Engine 944

Back in 1971, as the era of steam gave way to diesel, the Railway Department offered the beloved steam locomotive to the museum. In a true show of community spirit, 25 dedicated railway workers made the heartfelt move from the busy rail yards to a new home at the museum. The day the locomotive was brought across the Warrego Highway is still fondly remembered, traffic was paused and the town watched as a piece of its history rolled into place. Though the old engine had seen better days, a labour of love began. Its colours were lovingly restored with a fresh coat of paint by the Miles Apex Club, the brass gleamed once again thanks to the careful hands of Mr Jack Makin and Victor Rose crafted a new roof overhead. This was more than just a restoration; it was a tribute to the golden days of steam and the mateship that kept history alive 🚂🚂🚂

Riverlea Kitchen
Stepping back in time, this charming dwelling from “Riverlea” Condamine echoes the spirit of the 1890s. Its timbers, lovingly marked by pit saw, broad axes, adzing and the steady hum of a steam-powered circular saw, tells a story of craftsmanship and resilience. The detached kitchen, once joined to the homestead by a flagged floor and a trellis, thick with creeping vines, invites memories of family gatherings and the warmth of home. Thanks to the dedication of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bishop, with the help of Mr. Bernie Bourne and Mr. Joe Kingston, this piece of history has been beautifully restored, preserving the legacy of “Riverlea” for generations to come and can be found at

Christy Andersen is a well recognised name in our Historical Village and we love meeting descendants of the Andersen family who visit from time to time. It was a pleasure to meet this lovely family from Brisbane recently.

Anna - Great Granddaughter
Julie and Rachel - Great Great Granddaughters
Loralee, Jorja and Mason - Great Great Great Grandchildren

Christy Andersen lived in the Miles area for 42 years from 1878 - 1919. He and his wife Louise had 6 sons and 4 daughters. Among his many pursuits Christy was a Blacksmith well known for crafting the famous Condamine Bells with Pugh's Almanac listing him as Bell Manufacturer in 1897.

The Village proudly features a wonderful display of some of the original bells made by Christy Andersen.

The slab Coach House was built in 1971 by local members including Lloyd Bell, Allan Lark and Mr Vonhoff with the Lion’s Club adding the roof. Inside is a detailed half-size Cobb & Co Coach made by Ferguson’s coach builder, donated by Mary Lark, nee Woodside. 🛖

The Coach House features a well-preserved sulky, harness and a range of traditional saddlery items such as bridles, saddle bags, hitches, leather collars and stock saddles evoking classic country travel. 🐎🐎

Imagine travelling through the Australian outback in a classic horse-drawn coach, enjoying the scent of leather and country air—a journey that evokes the charm of the past. 🏠

The Columboola Hall
Back in 1910, Columboola’s first hall was just a timber floor, brush walls, no roof and lanterns lighting up the night. Local lads played tunes on mouth organs and violins, while Mrs Peters’ piano made its journey from Victoria, hauled by bullocks to the hall for dances 🪗🎻🎹
The lively Two-Bob-Hops raised funds for a new hall in 1912. This became the beating heart of the community—hosting dances, weddings, meetings and church services for decades 💃💒
By 1968, as roads and connections improved, the old hall was gifted to the Miles and District Historical Society and moved to its new home, keeping the spirit of Columboola alive.

Frank and Alice Tame
Frank Tame, born in Mittagong, NSW in 1889, moved to Queensland at sixteen and settled at “Glen Eden” on Columboola Creek. He married Alice O’Donnell in 1917—the first wedding held in Columboola Hall💒
They raised five daughters: Doreen, Aileen, Josie, Mavis, and Muriel. Frank carted sleepers for work and together with Alice, ran the Dogwood telephone exchange for 27 years 🪵☎️
Both were known for their hospitality, enjoyed sports and dancing and celebrated their golden anniversary in 1967. After Alice's health declined, they moved to Miles. A generous and resilient family whose warmth and strength helped lay the foundations of our local community🏈 🏏💃
