In 1930, Ken Riley was appointed station master at Milang. He arrived with his wife Lucy and their two boys. Lucy had a recipe for shaving cream which she sent to The Woman’s World section of the Advertiser in 1933. We found that recipe and thought it would be a great fundraiser if we made the shaving cream, packaged it in attractive Milang railway bottles and sold them to visitors. It was a disaster. Whilst it probably worked well in the 1930s with single blade razors, the cream just clogged up in modern multiblade razors.

The volunteers almost finished building the Light Railway Centre extension today but rain stopped the last piece of flashing going on so we retired to the bakery for coffee. Then we just need the floor concreting and power and lights fitted and we can start moving in the new exhibits and displays.

The touchscreen display in the Light Railway Centre is up and going again with a new computer; the original having died. Visitors can use it to view the Smithfield munitions railway in 1999, how the Cobdogla steam loco works, the Ruston and section car being started and several more topics. Just tap the buttons on the screen.

In the 19th century, the railway station was Milang's sole immediate contact with the outside world by mail or phone. Lines ran from the station along the track to Strathalbyn and thence to Mout Barker and Adelaide. After more than 100 years, we have restored the "Post and Telegraph" sign on the station. In the ticket office is the switchboard which directed calls to residents over shared party lines.
