Carved out of solid rock at 5,715 feet, using nothing but a hammer and chisel. 🔨⛏️

Back in 1860, members of the Bryce family hand-cut this high-altitude waterhole just 300 yards north of the summit of Mount Howitt. This vintage newspaper clipping captures a riding party on a trek out from Merrijig, stopping to water their horses at the very same spot.

The Bryce family went on to be the original pioneers of the legendary Wonnangatta Station Run, the remote valley that would later become the site of Australia’s most famous unsolved mystery, the 1918 Wonnangatta double murders.

From extraordinary feats of bush engineering to deep mountain mysteries, these are the stories we are capturing and preserving for future generations at the High Country Hall of Fame.

Have you ever hiked or ridden up near Mount Howitt? Let us know in the comments! 👇

"He walked up to the house, sat down... and I knew it was over."

To millions of movie fans, Denny was the star of The Man from Snowy River. But to Charlie, he was simply a mate, the best horse he ever backed in the mountains.

On Christmas Eve in the year 2000, Denny walked up from the paddocks one last time to say his goodbyes. Turn the sound up and listen to Charlie share the emotional final moments of a true High Country legend. 💔🐴

Help us record the history before it’s lost. 🎥🎙️

Every week, Charlie Lovick shares legendary stories of movie sets, cattle runs, old sawmills, and more. But recording, editing, and digitally archiving these first-hand accounts takes real resources. And building the hall of fame takes even more.

A simple $25 or $50 donation goes straight into our Heritage Preservation Fund, ensuring we can capture, edit, store, and show hundreds of high-country stories for future generations.

"If you ask me, I’d rather ride a good crossbred than a purebred any day of the week." Charlie Lovick

When you’re leading a line of trail riders through steep mountain ridges, timber, and river crossings, you need a horse that has it all. For Charlie, one horse that embodied the ultimate mountain ride was Snake.

Snake was a Quarter Horse cross Thoroughbred, a mix that horsemen everywhere actively seek out for rugged country:

🐴The Thoroughbred: Brings raw athleticism, stride, and endless stamina to cover the miles.

🐴The Quarter Horse: Brings solid bone, immense muscle power, cow sense, and a level head.

Crossing that American-bred Quarter Horse power with Thoroughbred athleticism gives you the best of both worlds: a horse with the power to climb, the athleticism to move, and the heart to handle the High Country.

What’s your ultimate horse breed or cross for riding the trail? Let us know in the comments.

Next time you reel in a trout in North East Victoria, you might owe a 10-cent royalty fee to Charlie! 🎣

Back in the 1870s, Charlie’s great-grandfather, William Mitchell Lovick, noticed the local rivers were missing a good eating fish. So after building the Merrijig Inn, he took a horse and cart all the way down to Melbourne, loaded up three wine barrels with trout fingerlings brought over from Tasmania, and brought them back to stock the Howqua and Delatite rivers.

Listen in as Charlie shares the origin story of High Country trout fishing, and his very reasonable tax for your next catch! 🐟🤠
