Hello friends,

Idlewild Press is downsizing. This decision has been inspired by John Fass, typographer and designer, who worked by day as one of New York's original Mad Men and by night printed fine books on a tabletop Albion in his room at the YMCA in the Bronx. I intend to keep making (or rather, resume, printing books) from the front room of my house.

This means that I will be looking to re-home some of my equipment. My preference is for these things to go to an educational institution, or to an individual who will love them as I have. I feel a tremendous sense of stewardship toward these things, and though it breaks my heart a little to let them go, I'd like to see them used actively in the service of making new, beautiful work.

Here's what I have to sell:

A 10x15 New Series Chandler & Price platen press (with motor, counter, ink fountain and two chases)
A 26" Chandler & Price guillotine
A marble-topped stone, with a drawer, shelving and a full range of maple furniture
A double-fronted metal type cabinet with sloped work top.
Two metal galley racks.
Various cases of type
Various sundry tools

Selling as a lot for $12,000. Includes everything you would need to operate a small printing operation. The equipment is housed on the ground floor and is easily accessible. Removal will be the responsibility of the buyer, however, I can recommend a very good local equipment mover who has moved these machines in the past. Also, it may be possible to take over the lease of my space and avoid the hassle of moving altogether!

Please forward this message to anyone you know who may be interested. For inquiries, please email me: [email protected]

Thank you! x

A message from David and Claire Bolton:

Following the success of the first workshop at the Abbey Press in the Monastery town of New Norcia in Western Australia, a second three-day workshop is now being offered. Dates are Tuesday 24 March to Thursday 26 March 2015. The workshop will be suitable for beginners, or those with a little experience. Equipment includes a good range of metal and wood type, borders, etc., an Adana and small proof press, an Arab treadle press and a Grafix (Vandercook lookalike) proof press. The workshop includes full board, a tour of the Monastery town, and a visit to the Library, which holds a collection of early printed books. The workshop will be taught by Claire Bolton, a printer with 40 years letterpress experience (and a research degree in early printing history).
A third workshop is planned for Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November 2015.

Imagine mastering the Japanese case.....

An interesting article about the resurgence of interest in letterpress printing in Japan, particularly among Japanese women.

Movable type by hand and letterpress printing seem to be tedious interminable processes in the modern world of computers, where scores of typefaces and fonts are as easy as a mouse-click away.

I sometimes dream of downsizing. Perhaps this is the answer?

Due to possible renovation of our historic venue, we're considering various options, including whether to continue printing at all if we're forced to shut down and move.
