Girlfriends - considers love, queerness, and femininity through the lens of urban Aboriginal identity. The composition captures a quiet moment between two women and their child, drawn from Brown’s recent animated short film A Story About Love, extending her visual language across film and painting.

This is a one-off original from Brown’s
Melbourne studio.

Aretha Brown is currently exhibiting in the National Gallery of Australia’s After the Rain Triennial. A major exhibition bringing together leading First Nations artists from across the country

Kyle Hughes-Odgers’ practice moves between studio-based work and public art, exploring how interventions at any scale can foster identity, memory and a sense of belonging.

His work examines the intersection of people, nature and place through bold geometric forms and stylised figurative imagery. Across murals, three-dimensional installations and studio paintings, he constructs visual narratives that invite viewers to connect with both the work and its underlying story.

Through a distinctive use of colour and scale, Hughes-Odgers transforms spaces from expansive public sites to more intimate exhibition settings, creating immersive experiences that engage both the physical and emotional senses.

Jasmine Crisp (She/Her) is a Painter and Muralist born and based in Adelaide, Australia.

Her detailed narrative-driven paintings can be found both in the gallery and in the open streets. Her practice features figures, spaces and belongings from her lived experience that are combined to create playful genre paintings of the imagined familiar.

Her visual tales are crafted in reference to past traditions of portraiture, often directly adopting symbolism from notable paintings of history. Long established symbols are inserted into domestic, or nostalgic versions of the present to form fantasised landscapes of the human experience.

Taj Alexander’s works explore the shifting nature of perception through colour, familiarity, and quiet moments of observation. His intuitive approach to painting opens a space for introspection, where light, shadow, and the emotional resonance of everyday environments are carefully considered and reimagined.

Grounded in a deep sensitivity to materiality, Taj elevates the ordinary in to the aesthetic, transforming industrial surfaces such as corrugated iron into sites of painterly complexity and nuance. Through this process, his works move between familiarity and ambiguity, inviting viewers into a contemplative space that is at once visually seductive and subtly disorienting.

After 15 years on Easey St, we’re moving… but not before one last proper send-off.

TAKE IT EASEY

Saturday April 4 from 6pm
Bar’s open. DJs playing. Merch on hand. Walls getting painted

We’re saying goodbye to the space (not the gallery) and kicking off the next chapter the only way we know how — by letting artists loose on the walls one last time.

This is the final send-off for Backwoods Gallery on Easey St.
Come celebrate, cause a little trouble, and Take It Easey with us.

Don’t miss it.
