Next month marks MAG’s 25th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, MAG has organised a night of festivities and celebration on the 1st of November. Hosted by Trulli’s, the night consists of a four course meal, musical entertainment and more.

For the month of October, MAG has hosted Gippsland artist, Elisabeth Scott, in gallery 2. Scott’s exhibition, titled Fins & Feathers, traces the memories and sensory experiences Scott has accumulated while living in the land and seascape of Gippsland. She describes the exhibition as capturing the “sensitivity of the flora and fauna specific to the area.”

Scott has dedicated herself to depicting the beauty of our natural landscape through works that are both delicate and encompassing.

We have two days left until the conclusion of our September exhibitions. Today, I am very excited to introduce Linda Shaw!

I’m sure that many of you already know who Linda is. Linda is a Gippsland based artist whose practise expands across genre, medium and technique.

When I asked Linda how her relationship to art has changed over the years, she explained: “My emphasis used to be on making everything as perfectly as I could and getting to the finish line. For me making my art is now all about the process, the journey… Being in the moment and focused on the making is what is most important.”

Make sure to visit Linda’s two exhibitions ‘Beyond Boundary’ and ‘Navigating the Continuum’ this weekend! 🤩

Artist and Muse.

When chatting, I asked Shae what the biggest influence was behind this exhibition. She was very proud to say her sister. “All of the paintings utilise reference images of my sister, Sasha. She was generous enough to pose in a variety of outfits. Through that process, I noticed something compelling: in her face, I saw my own as well as my mother’s. Coming from a large family, with four sisters, it felt as though I was painting them all simultaneously.”

We are already heading into the final few days of our September exhibitions. To celebrate a successful month, I will spend the next few days introducing the brains (and hearts) behind the art! To begin, I’d like to introduce Shae.

Shae is an oil painter based in Naarm. She is currently pursuing her BFA Honours at RMIT and exhibiting her first solo show with Meeniyan Art Gallery.

When I asked her how her education has impacted her practise, Shae had this to say: “Uni has provided a safe environment to fail and to take risks.” She explained that it is very important for her practise to “break down and reassemble.” This process allows her opportunities for discovery, learning and re-connecting.

“Painting can feel very instinctive, so having that process reflected back to you, whether through peer review or supervision, helps articulate what you are doing and build confidence moving forward.”

We have very much enjoyed hosting Shae’s expressive art! Make sure you come and visit before ‘When the Earth Remembers’ leaves on Sunday!

Meet Linda Shaw! She is currently exhibiting in gallery 2 and 3 at MAG. In this photo, Linda is proud to show off her powerful trio of abstract works. These three paintings are concerned with feelings of singleness, isolation and alienation. From right to left, each work represents a unique manifestation of these human emotions.

1. The first work captures the singleness of the embryonic state. The embryo is protected from the outside world in a haven built by its mother. Soon enough, they will join the big wide world. But for now, they are safe and alone.

2. This work is concerned with the
experience of loneliness in our digital age. The blue L shape on the top left hand symbolises the ‘plugged in’ state we constantly find ourselves. Although we are switched on digitally, we are alienated and distant in our everyday life.

3. The final work captures the isolation that occurs when we attempt to find meaningful connections with the people in our life but somehow miss. The two figures are separated by a thin gap - close but not close enough.
