Another frame that I decided to try was that that I covered / upholstered using a very soft suede skin. This was flexible so allowed it to stretch perfectly over the light weight timber frame. I enjoyed this idea too .

These were the first frames that were made , a bit rudimentary as Mvumira ( syringa tree ) were used , This particular timber and knotting method were seen on poachers bows which were seized and when we lived at Masapas Ranch ( Zimbabwe ). I also used both Rhodesian teak and the zebra / lead wood timber too but eventually stopped as these became too difficult to cut and carve . I tried various timber’s , one being the fever tree timber which was beautiful to work with too.. All cured Hides were purchased through a registered Tannery .

Prepping animal hides and frames - I was young back then 🙂.. I had an African chap who worked for me and whom made many timber frames for me , he also taught me how to do the various thonging methods using river reeds for the knotting of frame corners . He also helped me shave the skins which took time ( and these still do ) as it has to be meticulous as to not cut the skin with the blade.

It’s been a while since I posted any artwork due to those that I did before Christmas 2025 and for personal reasons cannot display these. However , today I was going through a drawer and found an envelope full of photographs taken of previous paintings that I did in Africa / going back to 19footsack 🙂 so thought I would share these with you today as these were done a very long time ago. This year has been incredibly busy for me and I’ve had a great time doing my artwork and would like to thank everyone who has supported me . I’ve enjoyed painting and sketching each and every one so thank you again.
