Last Wednesday, the Augusta Margaret River Shire Council voted unanimously to support the Executive Officer's recommendation to reject the proposed lime mine at the corner of Caves Road and Cosy Corner Road. This decision followed compelling deputations made on behalf of the community by Stuart Hicks, Chair of the Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association (MRBTA), and Charles Johnson AM, a local resident with extensive experience in state planning matters.
The proponents of the mine are seeking a 10-year lease to operate in an area of significant environmental value, which is also a key destination for visitors—particularly families who flock to Hamelin Bay to camp and unwind. The final decision on whether the mine will proceed now rests with the state government. A public meeting will be held to discuss the matter, and we are hopeful it will take place within our Shire. Details of the meeting date and location will be shared here.
Strong community opposition is essential to prevent this proposed mine—a development that will have devastating environmental and cultural impacts on this precious region, including the Caves Road area. I urge everyone to attend the meeting and make your voices heard. (Pauline McLeod)
