MAPS- Maitland Auto Preservation Society Inc.

MAPS- Maitland Auto Preservation Society Inc. Generally referred to as MAPS, Maitland Preservation Society Inc. Since then the membership has grown to over 160 memberships and 300 + people.

is the historic motor vehicle club of the Yorke Peninsula, formed in 1985 with a handful of enthusiasts. MAPS was formed in Maitland in 1985 with an initial membership of 14 people. Today it is a much larger club, but welcoming to enthusiasts of all ages from a wide area and with a great assortment of vehicles. Meetings are held monthly, except January, on the first Thursday of the month at 8pm.

Guest speakers add interest to the meeting as as they become available. The meeting business is never too onerous! Visitors are welcome, with no obligation to join. Tea and coffee are available after the meeting and probably some finger food too! We meet at the Performing Arts Centre at Central Yorke School in Pioneer Road, Maitland. Revised meeting times until further notice are 7.30 PM on the first Thursday of each month EXCEPT January. In the club's early days members helped create a working garage museum and this is now part of the building used for regular craft markets in the Heart of Maitland. MAPS also held a very popular swap meet during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Our membership is made up of about 150 couples, families and individuals from all over the Yorke Peninsula, Copper Coast and further away, so our actual membership is close on 300. Between us, we own more than 200 old vehicles, the majority of which are in regular use or are being restored. Our cars range from a rare Alvis to the ever popular Holden and Fords. We have no age or ownership restrictions of members’ cars and it is not necessary to own an historical vehicle. We have a busy year-round program of events, both close to home and further away, including weekends away and joint events with other clubs, such as the CRCA and NARC. Recent campouts have been at Spear Creek, Renmark, Point Turton and Burra. We also provide vehicles for events such as the Maitland Show. Having been bequeathed three historical motorcycles and three trucks in 2005, we donated the International truck to the Maitland Shed project for restoration. All the remaining items have been fully restored by new owners. From the funds received, a donation was made to the Maitland Progress Association in 2013. This was used to construct a suitable transport memorial in the Heart of Maitland area and includes mention of our benefactor, the late Rex Fox. Membership of our club allows the privilege of South Australia' special Club Registration scheme for vehicles over 30 years of age, a more relaxed scheme compared to the previous Code Of Practice. Under this scheme, vehicles may be used for up to 90 days in one year's registration period at a very much reduced rate. We produce a monthly newsletter, the MAPS Review, and have embraced new technology by sending this worldwide by email and by having our own website https://maps-yp.org. If you have an interest in our club and would like to know more, please contact Mike Osborne on 8837 3158, or email [email protected]

A good line up for the 9AM parade which traveled up and down the Minlaton main street before going to the showground. Good to see the large number of people on the sidewalks, despite the drizzle. What a great job had been done with all the floral decoration tubs lining the way. Joined by some other cars, several of which had strong local connections, plus a wider range of machinery made a worthwhile contribution to the display. My apologies for the poor quality of the current photos.

Of the many photos taken of vehicles at the Minlaton 150th vehicle display, this 1927 Austin Seven on the Yorke Creations stood out the most unique. For the real car buffs, this illustrates how to work on your old car, but telling your partner, " I'm just doing a little job in garden." Well done to Yorke Creations and car owner, John Launer!😂

Just a reminder/ update on the Pt Clinton Easter Day Market, a revised program will mean that there will be no specific MAPS car display. It is hoped that the feature will be included in the 2027 event. However for 2026, all are welcome the popular Easter Market.

Photos of the wide variety of vehicles at the 2026 Maitland Show.In addition to approximately 15 cars in the MAPS display, there was a range of utes etc. on the oval. The Ute Muster looked to be be well organised with lots awards being handed out. Of the modern vehicles in this area, the Suzuki SUV looked a nice car and the red Brumby a useful work horse.
For the Show Society's award, the beautifully presented 1972 Holden Torana XU1, displayed by Malcolm ( Olly) Olsen was a well deserved winner.
Perhaps a prize should have gone to Phil Ogg for getting not only four vehicles; 3 Citroens and a SAAB to the show, but also erecting the gazebo and signs.

Whilst not a MAPS event and no members with an entry this year, the 2026 Gawler Car Club;s Vintage and Veteran run is one to instill interest people in the REAL old cars! This events sees cars oftern unseen elsewhere. These range from the baby Austin 7s to the giant Packard. The condition of the cars and bike ranged from the show condition to the "oily rag" and original. For 2026, the 40 + entries started from Gawler, travelled via Cockatoo Valley to the Lyndoch morning tea stop. Plenty of cakes on offer! Suitably refreshed the entrants travlle on to Springton, via Williamstown Oval. Springton is a delightful small town and the hospitality offered there is worthy of mention. The Gawler Car Club's well equiped BBQ was in action, plus an ice cream vendor. Personally, I assisted with the marshalling at Lyndoch and caught up with a lot of old friends, as well making some new ones. Now all I have to do is work out where to hide a suitable vintage car in my shed. Worth mentioning that support from the FHMCSA and local tourism made this great value for the entrants.
