Pictured here is the De Havilland DH61 Giant Moth "Apollo", one of two aircraft purchased by Qantas in 1929 to establish the airline's first regular Brisbane connection.

Carrying up to seven passengers, the Giant Moth helped expand the Qantas network during the early days of Australian aviation.

The Catalina is one of those aircraft that only gets more impressive the more you learn about it.

During World War II, it operated the legendary Double Sunrise flights between Australia and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). This top-secret operation navigated Japanese-patrolled areas, continuing until July 1945.

Flights lasted up to 32 hours, long enough to watch the sun rise twice before landing.

Some archive photos deserve a second look... and this is definitely one of them.

Captured by Bob Leask in January 1984, this Qantas Boeing 747SP is seen landing at Wellington Airport, New Zealand. Designed for ultra-long-range routes, the 747SP was shorter, lighter and able to fly farther than the standard 747, making it one of the most distinctive aircraft ever to wear Qantas colours.

Captured from above, this is VH-EAW, one of just four De Havilland DHC-3 Otters built for Qantas by De Havilland Aircraft of Canada.

Registered in 1958, it was soon sent to Papua New Guinea, where its short take-off and landing capabilities made it ideal for flying into remote communities.
