The Onkaparinga Woollen Mill was a pivotal part of the Lobethal community from 1872 to 1993. In 2009, a dedicated group of volunteers - most ex mill workers - formed The Onkaparinga Woollen Mill Museum. The committee oversee a significant and rich collection of machinery, product samples and photographs that document the vibrant history of the mill, and work hard to ensure that such an important p

art of the Adelaide Hills history is available for the enjoyment of all. Visitors to the museum can learn about the different weaving methods and machinery that were used to produce the mills iconic blankets, clothing and upholstery items. Volunteers share their years of hands on knowledge, and can explain the differences between the shuttle, rapier and projectile weaving machines, as well as winders, twisters, and finishing machines and process. There are many fabric samples on view, and many visitors will recognise familiar patterns from the far reach of the mills products: not only the ubiquitous blankets, but government department uniforms, car upholstery, airline decor and blankets, school uniforms, apparel - even curtaining at the Adelaide Festival Theatre. The museum is available for tours by appointment, and entry is by gold coin donation. School, special interest and community groups are all welcome. To book a tour or for more information, please contact Chairperson Brian Brock during business hours on Ph: 08/83896725.
