I studied Architecture and then trained as a stonemason before gaining my Bachelor of Visual Arts and teaching qualifications. I am currently Head Teacher of a secondary senior college art faculty and enjoy a balance of teaching and making my own sculpture. I have been a sculptor for over thirty years and a teacher for about fifteen years. I live in a very beautiful bush setting on five acres wher

e my studio/gallery is a 1920s weatherboard house. I have a broad skill base and believe that good, sustainable art has a craft component. A knowledge and empathy for materials and processes strengthens concepts and provides aesthetic pleasure. As a teacher, I enjoy working with other peoples’ ideas and helping them to find the media and techniques to create; or alternatively, teaching skills and allowing the student to play with materials and see what comes about! I am also happy to work with your ideas, beliefs or philosophies and make sculpture that will take its place in your home and life. I have a strong material aesthetic – so don’t ask me to make something in materials like fibreglass or plastic! I believe that materials have innate qualities that the sculptor works with to create.

More work in progress. The way I work is a form of free-carving; measuring and locking in some elements but allowing for variations by leaving areas I cannot see yet and enough material to carry it out. It usually works for me and some good unplanned things can happen but that comes with plenty of risk.

Work in progress. Even though it is at the roughing-out stage I will still go in and do some detail when it is clear in my head. Showing my use of a range of hand tools and power tools. The air-hammer is a Cuturi from Italy. I have two; this is the smaller one. I am using a dolly type mallet with the scutch tool. The scutch tool hit is a rhythmic tap just from the wrist. Staccato.

My first stone carving for about 18 months so I’m thinking I will record the work in progress. No added audio so you can enjoy the sound of hand tools at work! This is Gosford sandstone called ‘ Guinea Gold’; it’s my preferred material even above Carrara marble. More to come.

Two new pieces that are both about land. The Drover’s Wife and Alligator (ceramic) and as yet untitled (steel, cement). I haven’t been carving stone for about 18 months but will be soon as my shoulder is much better and just needs strengthening. Wielding a 3 lb hammer will do that!
