We acknowledge the Gadigal/Wangal people of the Eora Nation - Traditional Owners of the land on which we stand. Boomalli a word from three different language groups, Gamileroi, Bundjalung and Wiradjuri, meaning to make a mark; to strike. The name is the philosophy and B

oomalli continues to make its mark within the wider arts community. Today Boomalli has members from all areas across NSW and beyond. Mediums of art practice include painting, print-making, photography, new media, sculpture, fabric design and mixed media. Boomalli artists are creative people who are stretching boundaries, producing cutting edge art, challenging stereotypes and where necessary, being controversial. Their works illustrate the complexity and diversity of black cultural life and provide an opportunity for the wider community to participate in contemporary Indigenous cultural expression. Boomalli focuses on the promotion, marketing and education of urban Aboriginal contemporary arts. Boomalli also has international networks and many of the artists have been involved in cultural exchanges, studio residencies, cultural festivals, seminars and exhibitions through projects either initiated by or offered to the organisation.

The Opening night of Boomalli’s Members Exhibition “Endangered Country” curated by Nioka Lowe

“When people are struggling just to get by, it becomes harder to stay aware of what’s happening around us. Across the continent, countless native species are now hanging by a thread. Since colonisation, an extraordinary amount of our unique wildlife has been erased. It’s estimated that more than 100 native species have already been wiped out. Once-abundant freshwater systems have been depleted and polluted through industrial agriculture and the accelerating impacts of human-driven climate change. Much of our rainforests, bush lands, and ancient ecosystems that have existed for thousands of years have been cleared, fragmented, or poisoned, with destruction still unfolding every day. It is because of this ongoing harm that we say Land Back. Custodianship for First Nations peoples is essential if this country is to heal. Knowledge, care, and a deep connection to Country are needed now more than ever.”

– Curator, Nioka Lowe

The exhibition is running until the 18th of july, we are looking forward to see you there!

Bembul Bayumi - Earth Song curated by Steven Lindsay Ross

For First Nation peoples, song is an intrinsic part of cultural life. song lines map country. Song lines hold our narratives, our teachings, our movements and our emotions. Song keeps us connected - to Country, to kin, to totems, to spirit, and to those who came before us. Song marks our transitions; sorrow, joy, ceremony and celebration.

the exhibition is open until the 18th of April.
