Evonne Goolagong became a household name around Australia in the ’70s and early ’80s. She was a fantastic tennis player and a great ambassador for the nation, winning 14 Grand Slam titles, including the Australian Open, Wimbledon and French Open.
She was awarded Australian of the Year in 1971 and was appointed an MBE in 1972. By the mid-70s she was at the peak of her career and married Roger Cawley. Less than twelve months later she was ranked number one in the world. Evonne and Roger had a daughter in 1977 before she went on to win Wimbledon again in 1980, making her the only mother to have won the coveted title, since World War I. In 1985 Evonne Goolagong Cawley was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and in 1988 into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
