Save the date!!!

On Thursday the 5th of November at 1pm is the 2026 AGM of the Korumburra & District Historical Society, in meeting room 1 at the Korumburra Community Hub.
As always, we desperately need more active members.

You may have noticed, when things happen in our community, such as the issues faced by the Senior Citizens, the Outdoor Pool, and even naming of roads, we need help from the Historical Society to delve into the history and background to give context to the stories.

But to provide that help, and to research the many queries we get each week, we need more people to share the load.
We need people with computer skills who are happy to learn our cataloguing system, people to search the archive for photos and documents, people who can reply to emails with the information found, there are so many tasks to be done to keep the society running.

More committee members to keep everything running, would also be fantastic.

After the meeting, there will be a reminiscence session featuring the Korumburra Picture Theatre to commemorate the 100th anniversay of it's opening in November 1926!!!
Come along and share your memories...did you go to the movies there? go to dances there, or even go roller skating?

Everyone is welcome, but only members can vote at the AGM.

Tomorrow, Thursday the 1st of October, is the monthly meeting of the Korumburra and District Historical Society, at 1pm in Meeting Room 1 at the Korumburra Community Hub.
We will begin our meeting with a talk by Dieter Kahsnitz of Ghost Rail Rider fame.
Dieter had contacted our Society a year or so ago wanting information about the rail line and the previous history of the towns and places of interest, to include in his video series. Scroll back to previous posts for a link to the videos on YouTube.
The monthly meeting will follow Dieter's talk.
New members are always welcome, particularly those who would like to volunteer their time to help preserve the history of our beautiful area.

The September meeting of the Korumburra & District Historical Society is on Thursday the 3rd of September at 1pm, in meeting room 1 at the Korumburra Community Hub.
We have a speaker coming to talk about their time living on Deal Island, followed by the actual meeting.
All are welcome!!

The August meeting of the Korumburra & District Historical Society, is on Thursday the 6th at 1pm, in Meeting Room 1 at the Korumburra Community Hub.
The afternoon will begin with a talk by Barry Sykes, on the Polish explorer Sir Pawel Strzelecki, who travelled through Gippsland in 1840. The Strzelecki Ranges were named in his honour.
All are welcome to this event.

In the Korumburra mud!!

For those of us in the southern hemisphere, today marks the winter solstice – the shortest day and longest night of the year.

Though our Victorian winter is far from over, this 1893 glass slide is a reminder of how differently Victorians once travelled through it.

The slide depicts a horse wearing a harness, pulling a sled in a snowy (or perhaps muddy) bushland setting. The man to the left is the driver; the woman and her baby are his passengers, both wrapped in blankets and nestled in the sledge to be pulled along behind the horse.
Given the words, “The Korumburra Sledge” written on the side of the sledge, we can assume that this photo was taken in Korumburra in South Gippsland Shire.

K&DHS is trying to source a better quality image of this shot taken at Korumburra Station. From the clothing being worn it was probably taken not long after the new station opened in 1908.

As part of our “Great Southern Rail Trail – A Ticket to History” project we are developing interpretive signage for the station complex. We are keen to use this shot or something similar as it shows not only the station but the people using it.

The next meeting of the Korumburra & District Historical Society is on Thursday the 7th of May at 1pm, in Meeting room 1 at the Korumburra Community Hub.
After the meeting, at 2pm we will be joined by Ken Griffiths from South Gippsland Shire who will talk to us about heritage overlays.
This might be of particular interest to people living in Radovick St, or anyone with an interest in preserving the look of our original buildings.
