In the Korumburra mud!!

For those of us in the southern hemisphere, today marks the winter solstice – the shortest day and longest night of the year.

Though our Victorian winter is far from over, this 1893 glass slide is a reminder of how differently Victorians once travelled through it.

The slide depicts a horse wearing a harness, pulling a sled in a snowy (or perhaps muddy) bushland setting. The man to the left is the driver; the woman and her baby are his passengers, both wrapped in blankets and nestled in the sledge to be pulled along behind the horse.
Given the words, “The Korumburra Sledge” written on the side of the sledge, we can assume that this photo was taken in Korumburra in South Gippsland Shire.

K&DHS is trying to source a better quality image of this shot taken at Korumburra Station. From the clothing being worn it was probably taken not long after the new station opened in 1908.

As part of our “Great Southern Rail Trail – A Ticket to History” project we are developing interpretive signage for the station complex. We are keen to use this shot or something similar as it shows not only the station but the people using it.

The next meeting of the Korumburra & District Historical Society is on Thursday the 7th of May at 1pm, in Meeting room 1 at the Korumburra Community Hub.
After the meeting, at 2pm we will be joined by Ken Griffiths from South Gippsland Shire who will talk to us about heritage overlays.
This might be of particular interest to people living in Radovick St, or anyone with an interest in preserving the look of our original buildings.
Visitors welcome.
