The theme at this year's show is technology, and we have no finer piece of 19th century tech in the town than the lighthouse. Amazing during the day tours ...and magical during the night ones too!

There’s still plenty of the October Long Weekend ahead — and today you can experience the Cape Jaffa Lighthouse by day and after dark.

☀️ Day Tours leave on the hour from 10am, giving you time to uncover the stories, artefacts and remarkable engineering inside the lighthouse.

Climb the helical staircase after dark and step into the Lantern Room, where the magnificent First Order lens and its clockwork mechanism take centre stage.

See the weights and workings that kept the huge lens rotating through the night and imagine a time when keeping that Light burning wasn't simply fascinating engineering — it was essential to the safety of ships navigating the coast.

What a day Sunday was following the railway line from Kingston to Naracoorte! About 30 cars joined the convoy. Many of us, despite having lived here for some time, saw things we had never seen before along parts of the line you just don't see when whizzing up and down the main road. Stories at every stop, good company, treasures hiding in plain sight, plus lunch in Lucindale and dinner in Naracoorte. Thanks to the presenters for sharing their memories, and the organisers from our museum, the Lucindale Historical Society and The Sheep's Back Museum for a fantastic day out celebrating our shared railway history in its 150th year.

Australia is literally on the move! Our continent slides northeast at about 7 cm a year – the fastest moving landmass on Earth. As it collides with the Pacific and Eurasian plates, pressure slowly builds deep underground.

When that pressure suddenly releases, we get earthquakes. While some areas shake more often than others, big quakes can strike anywhere, anytime, with no warning.

On average:
* Around 100 quakes (magnitude 3+) are recorded every year.
* Magnitude 5.0+ quakes hit every 1–2 years (like the 1989 Newcastle quake).
* About once a decade, Australia feels a magnitude 6.0+ earthquake.

So yes, the ground beneath us is always on the move – even if we don’t always feel it!

You know those famous photos from 1930s New York of construction workers waaaay up in the air eating their lunch on I-Beams while working on skyscrapers? Well, here's the lighthouse version out on the reef. It looks like it's under construction, but is dated 1908. In any case, it's just some blokes casually hanging out ...and hanging on ... we hope!

On the eve of the footy and netty finals, something a little different. Back before the Saints brought us together, the town supported two football teams Rovers and Ramblers ...one each side of the railway tracks. And these are the players from a one-off match sometime in the 1950s/60s (there's some conjecture about the year). Go girls, you were ahead of your time ...and go Saints this weekend!
