Local landholder Michael Gannon, whose property was commonly known as Lord’s Forest or Gannon’s Forest, sold approximately two acres of land for £30 to the New South Wales Council of Education as the site for a proposed public school. By October 1876, the school building, capable of accommodating up to 60 students, had been completed. Although the school was initially proposed to be named Forestdale, after Gannon’s Forest, it was ultimately decided that too many schools already used ‘forest’ in their names, and the name Hurstville was chosen instead.

Although the first Australian educational curriculum, created in 1872, did not include drama or theatre, focusing instead on ‘reading, writing, arithmetic, grammar, geography, drill, gymnastics as well as sewing and needlework for females’, many schools have a long-standing tradition of hosting plays and performances. This photograph shows a production of Hurstville Public School Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs c. 1900.

✨ Explore this photograph alongside others in 'School's Out', our current Snapshot Gallery exhibition looking back through historic photographs at the students, schools and educational facilities of the St George region. On until 8 November 2026!
