Tasmanian Transport Museum

Tasmanian Transport Museum In 1960 a Hobart tramcar was donated by the Metropolitan Transport Trust for presentation. The Society was formed in 1962 and continues.

The Museum is a project of the Tasmanian Transport Museum Society who members have worked in a voluntary capacity for its establishment. As a result the Society was formed in 1962 with the aim of preserving items of transport interest which were disappearing from the daily scene. the first ten years saw the preservation of many items either by purchase or donation. It wasn't until1972 that the pr

esent site was leased from the Glenorchy City Council. After the laying of rail track the first items were moved to the site in 1976. The museum was officially opened on December 3rd 1983. Construction of the permanent buildings commenced in 1976 (Electric Traction building) followed by the Railway Station (1980), Steam Technology building (1983), carriage Shed (1984), Round House (1986), the Fires Services Museum (2004) and finally the Road Transport Display Hall in 2013). Society Members have carried much of the developmental work with the State Government being the major financial contributor for capital works. The Society has steadily acquired an extensive range of exhibits, which together with relics, models, photographs etc will portray many facets of the history of Tasmanian transport. The task of developing the Museum, restoring the exhibits and maintenance requires considerable time and finance. The Society would welcome community assistance or involvement with this work. The Society is proud of the progress that has been achieved by a dedicated but relatively small active membership. It is confident that the Museum will develop into an important community asset catering not only for its cultural and educational needs but also for those who find pleasure in things from the past and those enthusiasts to whom past forms of transport have a particular fascination.
