We’ve received some fascinating donations over the past few months. Today we showcase a wooden figure carved by local Papua New Guinea personnel who worked with the 92nd Australian Signals Directorate deployed to PNG during WW2. Standing approximately 35cm high, it was modelled on SGT F Taylor and donated by his daughter. An iconic symbol of the cooperation between Australian and PNG personnel characteristic of the conflict.

Thank you from Museum Manager

National Volunteer Week is a time to say thank you and to acknowledge the incredible contribution of volunteers in creating a better community for all of us.

AMT is fortunate to have a large team of volunteers from all stages of life. If you’ve been following our volunteer stories this week you’d have glimpsed of some of the varied activities our volunteers undertake. From tour guides to carpenters, curators and conservators, to research and transcription, there isn’t just one way to volunteer, but there’s always something interesting to be done.

Most importantly, our volunteers are a community who come together not only to contribute time and skills, but to truly enjoy their time here. Earlier this year we held a Volunteer Badge ceremony which saw six separate 10 years badges awarded. Find out more about volunteering with AMT at:

Editing the past? This is the work of our volunteer who had an extensive professional career in photography before joining our volunteer team, over 10 years ago. Their latest work has been to bring this 1870 photo to life!

This week we join organisations around Australia to celebrate National Volunteer Week!
What does a day in the life of an AMT volunteer look like?

Some of our volunteers focus on capturing the experiences of Tasmanians in service. The image below is of one of our volunteers transcribing a collection of over 300 letters between a soldier and their wife during WW2. Other volunteers are working on transcribing diaries from WW1. Deciphering multiple forms of cursive and copperplate hand writing is painstaking, time consuming but fascinating work.
