Joyful, disarming and quietly ritualistic, Vipoo Srivilasa invites audiences into an immersive, multi-sensory exhibition shaped by ceramics, touch, sound and participation.

Moving through darkness and anonymity, visitors make, offer and confess. Here, the subconscious takes the lead: what emerges when we let ourselves be honest, allowing truth to surface through making, gesture and sensation.

Curated by Caine Chennatt

Dark M**o is Lutruwita/Tasmaniaโ€™s midwinter festival celebrating the dark through large-scale public art, food, music, fire, light, and noise, in Nipaluna/Hobart. Each year, Dark M**o delves into centuries old rituals to explore the links between ancient and contemporary mythology, humans and nature, religious and secular traditions, darkness and light, and birth, death and renewal. darkmofo.net.au

Emerging at the centre is a colourful ceramic guardian figure stands upright, grinning wide with bulging eyes and a long tongue hanging from its mouth. Flame shaped horns crowned with small gold circles rise from its head, while its body is patterned with scales, spots, and animal motifs in vivid greens, yellows, blacks, and reds. Gold lustre details punctuate the figure, giving it a playful yet confrontational presence that blends humour, folklore, and ritual.

Step away from the glow of the digital world and immerse yourself in the slow, hands-on magic of analogue photography.

In this unique workshop, participants will explore alternative photographic processes by learning how to create plant-based photographic developer using native plants. Guided through the full process from chemistry to image-making, youโ€™ll experiment with tray-based darkroom processing and produce paper negatives using handmade developer.

This workshop offers an intimate introduction to experimental analogue techniques, combining photography, botanical knowledge, and material exploration. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of photographic development, the creative possibilities of plant-based chemistry, and their own handmade photographic outcomes.

No prior darkroom experience is necessary โ€” just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

All artworks and photographs created during the workshop will be displayed in an upcoming exhibition at the Sunroom Gallery. The exhibition will be open to the public from Tuesday, March 17th, through Friday, March 27th.

This workshop is presented by the Cultural Collections and Libraries team as part of the Against the Instant exhibition at the Plimsoll Gallery,
14 March โ€“ 24 April 2026.

Celebration event Friday 27 March

In a world where images arrive instantly and endlessly through our screens, you are invited to return to slowness, tactility, and process. Take time to pause and consider what is lost in the speed of digital culture: the patience of making, the weight of the hand, and the intimacy of creation.

Here, photography becomes something materialโ€”shaped through light, chemistry, time, and care. Each image carries the trace of decision, accident, and experimentation, where softness, distortion, and imperfection are not flaws but marks of the presence of the maker.

This is not nostalgia, but an affirmation of analogue practice as something vital: a way of working that values attention, embodied labour, and the quiet insistence of the handmade. In slowing down, the photograph becomes more than an imageโ€”it becomes evidence of human connection.
