Tomorrow is the last of our History Month presentations, many thanks to the Hahndorf Academy who loaned some precious display items, and for all who came and gave constructive feedback.

The Hahndorf Archive volunteers aren't at a desk every day! We are on a mission to document many of the old Prussian homes & buildings around Hahndorf. Thanks to Heather Petty (attention to minute detail as you see here) & the property owners this is No 3. Built around 1856 the red gum 6" by 6" timber work in the roof space, is substantial & almost certainly built by Carl FÄHRMANN. We were there all day this week and still the project is incomplete. A 'photographers dream' says Heather. This farm belonged to the family of Anna Dorothea KRAMM & Johann Friedrich PAECH from Rentschener in Prussia, both passengers on the Zebra.

Captain Hahn: a few months ago a German woman left her details at the Hahndorf Academy offering her help in researching anything to do with Captain Hahn because she has a holiday house on the Isle of Sylt where he was born and lived. Then we had an exchange of photographs. See here the Hahn family home.

Our History Month events, 13 & 27 May have been booked out, and we did a trial run with the Mt Barker & Hahndorf National Trust & other interested local folk, 27 in all. Look forward to seeing if we can replicate the experience for people wanting to know more about the Lubasch family / the Hahndorf Archives / Reg Butler / or the unique half timbered barn at Beerenberg.

These photographs were sent to me the other day from a volunteer at Old Tailem Town. It seems that many years ago when this Jaensch house was removed and the family donated the block of land for the Pioneer Park, it, or parts of it were relocated to the OTT and they are looking for more photographs &/or information about this same building.... in its original place, or memories of stories about this original fachwerk building. Any Jaensch descendants with information would be welcome to contact me.

We are having our 1st History Month occasion, there are limited spaces, & the story will be of interest to all descendants of the Zebra passengers & will feature Hahndorf pioneers: Lubasch, Liebelt & Faehrmann. The audio visual will be held in the old barn, close to Hahndorf. All inquiries [email protected]

Some of the work at the Archives is repetitive AND always interesting... just ask Lee, she's spent a year organising hundreds of microfiche, & Kaye is currently reading through 1930 Diaries while removing the dust!

In the book by E.R. Simpson you will see Reg Butler holding the flag given to him by a resident from the Isle of Sylt where Captain Hahn of the Zebra was born & died. The Hahndorf Archives holds this flag and as of last week when I found the 1979 letter amongst our Archives, from Alwin Pflüger, stating that he was posting the flag to Reg we now know who gave it to him.

Following the expressed wishes of Reg Butler, his Archival Collection, Research Material & extensive Library is now being managed by the Hahndorf History & Heritage Association Inc.

Our first AGM will be held on 18 February at Beerenberg Farm. Free membership is offered to all who are interested in the Hahndorf Archives & I urge you to take that up this invitation via a Membership Form which can be emailed to you or can be collected from Natasha Paech.

A copy of our Constitution is also available for you.
