Greta Historical Museum - authorised page Greta Historical Museum is housed in the former Greta Council Chambers. Its huge history includes coal mining, the army training camp and the migrant camp.

Housed in the former Greta Council Chambers, between the Bakery and former court house, in the heart of the village of Greta, NSW, this museum has a huge history for its small size which includes information on its coal mining, army camp and migrant camp. Plenty of parking means you can stop a caravan across the road, have lunch at a park or one of the food shops and make your visit a full day. T

he museum is easy to find as it is not far from the Hunter Expressway and is situated on part of the New England Highway which becomes the High Street as it runs through the town.

The North Head Quarantine Station near Manly has an astonishing history of dealing with Australia’s migrants. From its foundation under Governor Darling’s Quarantine Act in August 1832 to its official closure in April 1999, the Quarantine Station had the task of quarantining and treating any migrants and crew who entered Australia on a ship which developed ship-borne diseases. The buildings at the site grew rapidly over the years as quarantine, accommodation and isolation wards grew rapidly.
The arrival of the Beejapore in 1853, with over 1000 passengers, triggered a new building phase. 55 people died during the voyage, and a further 62 died at the Quarantine Station, from the illnesses of measles, scarlet fever and typhus fever. The majority of the passengers and crew had to be housed in tents.
The impact of improved medical science, immunisation, and quarantine procedures in the twentieth century led to decreased use of the Quarantine Station. After WW2 the development of Bonegilla, Greta and other camps provided other facilities for migrants.
The Quarantine Station came into prominence again when many orphan children from the Vietnam War were housed there when the fall of Saigon was imminent. They remained at the Station until adoptive parents could be found.
The Station Museum in the reel was initially curated by Herb Lavaring, Station Director 1963-1975.
North Head in 2026 is now jointly owned by the Sydney Harbour National Park Management and private owners who have renovated much of the accommodation to provide for paying guests. There are regular Ghost Tours of North Head … good sleep afterwards is not guaranteed.

An excellent turnout at today's Greta Seniors Morning Tea listened to Alek Schulha give a fascinating address on the history of the Greta Migrant/Army Camp.
