Greenough Museum & Gardens The Greenough Museum is evolving to meet the needs of visitors and the community. Wander through Elizabeth's Garden and the Community Vegie Garden.

Discover the social history of Greenough set up in the spacious rooms of what was once the largest house in this area (built between 1862-80 for John & Elizabeth Maley). View the historic trees (including what could be Australia's oldest leaning gum tree). The museum's aim is to provide an interpretation of life of the Greenough Flats from Aboriginal times to today. This, the oldest museum in the Mid-west celebrates its 60th anniversary today. Right from the start it has been dependent upon the support of volunteers and the donors of objects to function.
Over those years this museum has seen three name changes and a change of management.
The museum continues to evolve, so to remain relevant to all who visit this place.
As part of the 60th celebrations, we are giving you the opportunity to visit this museum on Saturday 5th September between 8.30am and 2.30pm free of charge.
Even if you have been before, take up this opportunity, because as our logo states, you will "Discover something different every time."

It is through the generosity of supporters that we are continually able to improve facilities at this museum.
A recent donation has enabled us to purchase 4 steel storage cupboards to house our archives; including the nationally significant collection of documents from Maley's Mill and Store.

Here's a note written 156 years ago today from the Maley Mill & Store Archives.
The writer was an interesting character. Robert Whitehead was born c1817 in Bath, England. He has the dubious distinction of being transported as a convict twice to Australia. In January 1838 he was found guilty of larceny and shipped to New South Wales. He returned to England in 1852, and there was found guilty of illegally returning from transportation to Van Diemen’s Land, before the expiration of the time, and received another life sentence. Whitehead was sent to Fremantle on the Ramillies in 1854. He worked at the Geraldine Mine and married Olivia Woolnough at Gwalla in 1867.
As this letter proves, he was at Greenough in 1870. What became of him, we do not know.

Jos. connolly

Joseph and Robert Connolly were farmers at South Greenough.
They are hundreds of similar notes in our archives, providing brief glimpses of who was living at Greenough in the 1860-70s.
