You're invited to our upcoming Annual General Meeting, 31/5/26, 2pm.
Our Guest Speaker will be Rob Garbutt, researcher, writer and artist, speaking on the topic Restless – A P Goodwin, Naturalist, of Lismore. Hear about the ever-restless Adolph Goodwin who, beginning in the late 1870s, ran a global import/export business from Lismore, importing fancy goods from Europe and the United States, while exporting ‘objects of natural history’ and ‘native curiosities’ to museums around the world. As usual, afternoon tea will be served after the meeting. The details are as follows.
Date: Sunday 31st May 2026
Time: 2pm
Place: Goonellabah Community Centre, 27 Oliver Avenue, Goonellabah.

In the lead-up to ANZAC Day next Saturday, we'd like to pay tribute to two of our many local servicemen. Brothers, Fred and Frank Gallagher, were both farming on the family property at Eureka when they enlisted in Lismore on the same day in November 1916. Six weeks after they joined up, their mother became a widow. They both belonged to the 41st Battalion and fought on the Western Front. In October 1917, they were fighting in the Battle of Passchendaele in Western Flanders when Frank (23) was mortally wounded, dying the same day. The following day, Fred (29) was killed in action. In April 1919, a memorial tablet was unveiled for their father, John Gallagher, at St Aidan's Church of England, Eureka. At the same time, two handsome inscribed brass vases were unveiled in memory of John's sons Fred and Frank, who paid the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. LEST WE FORGET

RRHS Research rooms will be closed on the morning of Tuesday 31 March 2026. This closure allows volunteers who were close to Jenny Dowell to attend her public funeral.
Jenny was a Patron and a Council representative on our Management Committee for many years, and her support and commitment to the history of our town never waivered. Our deep condolences to Ron, Georgie and Tim. You will be missed Jenny.

HAPPY 90th ANNIVERSARY RRHS! - Come celebrate with us, Sunday 15th March 2-4pm at our new home at the Goonellabah Community Centre. Details below:

2026 marks a major anniversary for the Historical Society: it is 90 years since we first started, back in 1936.

We will be celebrating the occasion at this month's Quarterly Meeting, to be held on Sunday 15 March from 2-4pm, at the Goonellabah Community Centre, 27 Oliver Avenue. There will be a talk by President Robert Smith and Secretary Robbie Braithwaite entitled "Exceptional Community, Exceptional Society: 90 years of RRHS". There will also be birthday cake! Mark it in your diary or on your 2026 RRHS calendar.

Just in case that isn't enough local history for one day, we will also be holding our monthly stall at the Bowlo Markets from 9am - 12.30pm on the same day, weather permitting (shutting down slightly early in time for the meeting).

We look forward to seeing you at one or both places.
