50th Inductee - Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame: Mat Rogers

Tonight's 57th Annual Gold Coast Sports Awards will see dual international Mat Rogers, become the Hall's 50th Inductee.

Brought up on the Gold Coast and a product of the famed sporting academy at The Southport School, Mat Rogers is one of the select band of international footballers capped both by the Kangaroos (rugby league, 11 times) and Wallabies (rugby union, 45 appearances). Dally Messenger was the first such dual international.

Mathew Steve Rogers, son of renowned league player and later coach Steve, was an Australian Schoolboys rugby union representative, before following in his father’s footsteps and making 123 National Rugby League appearances for Cronulla Sharks. In a seven-year stint he established several Cronulla club scoring records, received the Australian Sports Medal for services to the game, and was the tournament top scorer when Australia won the Rugby League World Cup in 2000.

With the 2003 Rugby Union World Cup beckoning, Mat switched codes and for five seasons represented the New South Wales Waratahs, demonstrating his versatility in several positions. His Wallabies debut against France in 2002 was alongside fellow newcomers Nathan Sharpe (another former TSS boy who became a Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Famer in 2015) and Wendell Sailor.
He was a member of the Wallabies team famously pipped by an extra-time Jonny Wilkinson drop kick when England won the World Cup Final 20-17 before an 82,957 crowd at Stadium Australia.

When the Gold Coast Titans came into being in 2007, Mat Rogers returned to league as a foundation signing and represented the club on 77 occasions, the last of which was as an injury stand-in and coincided with his 200th NRL appearance.

In retirement, he has been a prominent presence in media and philanthropic activity in the Gold Coast and wider community.

48th Inductee - Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame: Andrew Symonds

At the recent Gold Coast Sports Awards, the latest Inductee to the Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame was revealed - former Australian cricketer, Andrew Symonds. Born in England, Symonds moved to the Coast as a teenager where he lived and played during his glittering international career.

Arguably the most explosive all-rounder in world cricket for a decade, he made 238 appearances for Australia between 1998 and 2009 in Test and limited overs matches.

He featured in Australia’s 2003 and 2007 World Cup wins, was five times a Sheffield Shield champion with Queensland, and in all formats around the world scored over 35,000 runs and took more than 700 wickets in a 19-year career.

More than all of those statistics, though, he was all about excitement - a big-hitting batsman, versatile bowler of spin and medium pace, and a world-class athletic fielder.

Players with that sort of skillset are worth multi-millions nowadays. While arguably a man before his time on the pitch, he did command a record contract when he signed up for the early version of the Indian Premier League – a feat that possibly led the way in terms of financial reward for today’s professional cricketers.

From first to last he remained a generally laidback larrikin, sometimes pursued by controversy, yet always a great team man, keenly aware and respectful of his origins, and the ultimate crowd-pleasing entertainer.

Andrew was a classic early example of a local youngster becoming a beneficiary of the pathway created when the Gold Coast became a grade cricket club in the Brisbane competition in 1990. A junior player at Palm Beach-Currumbin, he was a foundation member of the Gold Coast District Cricket Club at the age of 15, where played in their early premiership-winning sides and was, and remains, an inspiration to all local players aspiring to become state and national representatives.

Very sad Gold Coast sport news overnight with the passing of legendary triathlon coach, Jenny Alcorn. With a passion for her sport and the Gold Coast, Jenny was a deserving winner of the Daphne Pirie Spirit of Sport Medal at last year's Gold Coast Sports Awards. From all at the Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame, our thoughts are with Jenny's family and friends at this sad time.

Prominent Gold Coast sporting icon Jenny Alcorn has died after a battle with cancer, remembered as an triathlete with a “deep passion” for the sport and “endless care” for all.
