Cavalcade’s founding members had the significant foresight to recognise the heritage significance of the collection by recording the provenance of acquisitions and retaining the name of the gown’s owner. Dedicated work of committed volunteers, with guidance from museum advisors, has enabled maintenance of a full schedule of community events and exhibitions whilst ensuring that the collection is conserved to the highest standards. The collection, through a ‘Museum without Walls’ philosophy, brings history alive with parades, presentations and displays & exhibitions. Our philosophy has inspired the public to donate family heirlooms. When each gown is donated, a record is made of the donor and original wearer’s history, where they lived, who their family was, where they wore the gown and what made the gown a family heirloom. The collection and associated provenance is an outstanding record of the social history of Australian women and their families, using fashion as a medium.

We’ll be joining around 80 stallholders offering fabrics, yarn, buttons, haberdashery and all sorts of creative possibilities.
Come along, browse the stalls and perhaps discover just the thing for your next project.

Meet Nell. ✨
A ballerina-length evening dress, c.1950, with all the glamour you’d expect from the era.

The bodice is an outer layer of lace embellished with sequins, backed with tulle. The full skirt has three layers of tulle over a black taffeta petticoat, giving Nell her lovely ballerina silhouette.

A little sparkle, a lot of tulle — and a wonderful glimpse of evening dressing in the 1950s.

🌸✨ Continuing our celebration of Wedding Month with a charming glimpse into the past…
Our 1913 cream satin flower girl dress is a beautiful example of early 20th-century bridal fashion. Delicately adorned with pearl beads across the bodice, the ensemble is completed with a matching bonnet and shoes — a wonderfully preserved picture of elegance for a young member of the wedding party.
Over a century later, the details still speak to the timeless beauty of wedding fashion. 🤍

Wedding Dress, c. 1929
A beautiful example from the Cavalcade collection, this elegant silk wedding dress is unfortunately one of those pieces whose history remains largely unknown. With its low waist, fine tulle overskirt and intricate beaded embroidery, it captures the distinctive elegance of the 1920s.
By the early 1900s, the bustle had disappeared from women’s fashion, replaced by a much softer, more fluid silhouette. Wedding gowns of the 1920s represented a dramatic departure from traditional bridal attire, with gowns falling straight from the shoulders and waistlines dropping to the hips, creating a long clean line.
Hemlines also rose significantly, hovering anywhere from mid-calf to just above the ankle, reflecting the new freedom and modernity of the era.
A beautiful example of fashion in transition — from the structured silhouettes of the past to the liberated lines of a new era.
