Australian Catholic University Art Gallery, 26 Brunswick St, Fitzroy SAMPARI 2017 is an exhibition of new artworks inspired by West Papua: the people, cultures, politics, resistance, history, or extraordinary maritime and territorial environments. A special feature is the WALL O
F MELANESIAN ART, from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, PNG, Fiji, New Caledonia, Torres Strait, which celebrate the unique work in the United Nations of the PACIFIC COALITION FOR WEST PAPUA. This story, from a variety of source material, illustrates the skill and loyalty of armed and unarmed West Papuans, and the devastation heaped upon them and their land during the Japanese and Allied occupations. During the Sampari Exhibition, the West Papua Women’s Office hosts a series of FORUMS & EVENTS to enable other artists, like poets, songsters, musicians, writers, intellectuals, to expose and share their views about the political and humanitarian plight of Australia’s nearest neighbour.
