After a lot of preparation over the past few weeks we've finally been able to relocate the 105mm howitzer to a new position near the gate, and thanks to a lot of muscle power from some soldiers of 7CSSB, they pushed and steered the 40mm Bofors gun into its new location inside building E71 where it can be displayed away from the effects of the weather. This will give us extra visitor parking spaces on the parade ground.

9th Battalion's History

The 9th Battalion was a Queensland-raised infantry unit formed in August 1914 as part of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, Australian Imperial Force.
Gallipoli
The battalion was among the first ANZAC troops ashore at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. It landed near Anzac Cove at about 4:28 am, just south of Ari Burnu, and fought throughout the campaign until the evacuation in December 1915.
One of its notable members, Lieutenant Duncan Chapman is often identified as one of the first soldiers ashore.

Western Front
After Gallipoli, the 9th Battalion served on the Western Front in France and Belgium, taking part in major battles including:

- Pozières
- Messines
- Ypres
- The Hindenburg Line

The battalion earned a strong reputation for its service and sacrifice during the war.

Legacy
The unit is remembered in Queensland through memorials such as Anzac Square and through the Ninth Battalions Association Inc. Its traditions continue in the modern 9th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment (9 RQR).

Later Record
The battalion’s story was recorded in The Fighting Ninth, originally associated with 9th Battalion News, established in 1947. The battalion suffered heavy casualties, and many veterans experienced long-term health effects after the war.

The history of the Ninth Battalions can be found at our Ninth Battalions War Memorial Museum, located at Enoggera Gallipoli Base.

A great visit today by twenty young people taking part in the Defence Work Experience Program. They were all fascinated by the range of artefacts and equipment displayed within the museum and the questions and interest shown was encouraging. We wish them good luck as they make decisions along a career path.

Thanks to Elizabeth Watson-Brown our local MP for facilitating the Community Service Grant which enabled us to purchase mannequins and head busts to better display uniforms of soldiers from all periods in which the 9th Battalions have served, as well as those of past Queensland Governors which have been donated to the museum.

The Clifton Gun, a historical cannon with profound ties to Queensland's history, has been prominently relocated to the entrance of Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera. Previously housed at the Ninth Battalions War Memorial Museum within Gallipoli Barracks since its reopening on July 24, 2010, the cannon's new placement was unveiled today, November 9, 2025. This circa 1797 cannon is one of 12 guns dispatched by Queen Victoria dispatched 1861, arrived in Brisbane 1862. to bolster the defense of the Queensland colony.

The 7th Brigade, in partnership with the Samford Museum, spearheaded the restoration of this significant artefact, ensuring its preservation for posterity. Its new position at the barracks’ entrance enriches the historical fabric of the area while honouring local heritage and the longstanding ties between Queensland and its colonial legacy. The cannon now stands as a prominent historical symbol for all who enter the site.

The unveiling ceremony was officially conducted by Brisbane’s Own 7th Brigade, led by Brigadier GJS Cornelia, DSM, CSM, Brigade Commander, and Senior ADF Officer, along with Warrant Officer Class One N Cole, Brigade Regimental Sergeant Major. This event marks a new chapter in celebrating the historic and cultural significance of the Clifton Gun in Queensland's narrative.
