🥩The Butcher's Shop Till - Emmaville 💰

This till was for many years used in the Butcher shop (now demolished) located next door to the Club Hotel in O'Donnell Street, Emmaville. The shop was operated by Mick and Marie Witherdin trading as RJ & MT Witherdin.
The till was originally used in the Club Hotel (bottom pub) when it was owned by the Gerke family.
The Butcher shop had used a small cash box on the counter, but when this mysteriously disappeared it was the topic of conversation the next day at the pub.
The legendary Lil Gerke, who operated the hotel for many years, volunteered that they had an old till that was stored in the stables at the back of the pub. So, the old till was cleaned up and found a new life in the Butcher's shop.
It was, and is, heavy enough to ensure that no one would run away with it and so it stayed in the Butcher's shop until Mick's retirement.
The Emmaville Mining Museum now has the till on display thanks to the Witherdin family.

🎙️✨ Voices of the Emmaville Mining Museum – Oral History Recordings ✨🎙️

We’re excited to share that long time Emmaville Mining Museum legend Ronnie Jillett and President Evan Brown have lent their voices to a new series of oral history recordings regarding mining history, military history and the displays at the museum. 🪨🏛️

🎧 This project's recordings, led by the mining museum and developed by Paul Wilson (Listen in Glen Innes), will capture stories of the museum to be shared across social media, museum website, interactive displays and digital sound trail projects in future years.

This project ensures that the voices of the volunteers and history of the museum is preserved and celebrated for generations to come. 🌿💚

Stay tuned as these amazing local audio stories come to life! 🙌

The Emmaville Mining Museum recently received a donation of an old upright piano. The piano was manufactured by Hunt and Sohn of Stuttgart, Germany, in 1851 and is reported to be the first piano in Emmaville.
This instrument was used for many years in the Emmaville Imperial Dance Hall by local bands and musicians. The Imperial Dance Hall was converted to a picture theatre in the 1930's.
The piano was moved by horse and dray from the dance hall to the property of "Annandale" at Pyes Creek in the 1920's after being purchased by William and Martha Shaw. The old piano was still being played up until 2015 by the descendants of the Shaw family. The donation was made by Yendis Johnson, a descendant of William and Martha Shaw.
The piano is just one of the interesting artefacts that you can see when you visit our great museum.
