Tours include History Tour, Former Officer Tour, Former Prisoner Tour, Escapes Tour and a Ghosts & Gallows Tour. Named after the road which led to it, that became a boggy quagmire after rain, “Boggo Road Gaol” was officially known as the Brisbane Prison. For 109 years it dominated the skyline of the capital of Queensland. It’s stark red brick walls, and imposing guard tower on Annerley Road have become iconic for all the wrong reasons. Boggo Road Gaol opened in 1883 as the Brisbane Gaol. Used mainly as a holding prison for those serving short sentences or on remand, its initial infamy came from it being a place of execution. In 1903, a new purpose-built separate women's gaol was created. After nearly 20 years of use, H M Gaol for Women was closed, its female occupants shifted to another part of the prison site. In the 1920s, the men of the St Helena Island prison in Moreton Bay were moved into the former women’s gaol. Renamed Number Two Division, this section became home to those serving the longest sentences – killers, murderers, and violent offenders. Three cellblocks became the homes of “Lifers”. Soon Boggo Road became notorious. Public Tours 7 days - 11am

On Wednesday 19th of August 8am, we had the pleasure of attending the Boggo Road Village official opening!

Mark Stockwell, Betty Stockwell and Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, who were the first to welcome this community hub.

Jack had a chance to say a few words about the history of the Gaol

In tow were some of Boggo Road Gaol’s Prison Players – Women’s division 1907. Warder Martin and inmate Smith helped demonstrate how to properly fold a blanket.

Please share this petition widely - we are aiming for 10,000 signatures by 31 December 2026 - help us reach that goal (goal, not gaol)! https://c.org/vQL6wy5mQp

Boggo Road Village Opens - Not the Gaol... Yet:

Boggo Road Village officially opens Wednesday 19th August!

Not the Gaol…but set alongside the iconic heritage prison, Boggo Road Village by Stockwell is home to dining and service-based retail, plus medical and allied health facilities.

It will be officially opened by Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner. Mark Stockwell and special guests will be present to celebrate the Boggo Road Village opening.

Myself and our team – the award-winning, long-term operator of tours, experiences and events at the historic prison - will have a display representing Boggo Road Gaol. In 2022 we unfortunately needed to close down our operations while the Village was being constructed... but now it is finished!

Mark Stockwell deeply appreciates the history of Boggo Road Gaol and was committed to preserve the detention cell complex, tower and Halliday’s Leap as part of the development. We are delighted that it is finally opening.

State Government has always said that our tours could not resume until the development was finished, following remedial works in and around the Gaol (painting cellblocks and levelling the Gaol forecourt); so the time is drawing closer.

We will keep you all up to date but a reopening date for Boggo Road Gaol is now a priority.

Please share this petition widely - we are aiming for 10,000 signatures by 31 December 2026 - help us reach that goal (goal, not gaol)! https://c.org/vQL6wy5mQp
