🚨An original Reg Mombassa, in Waterloo.
The Black Canoe Gallery is proud to present The Australian Jesus with an Alien, an original work by Chris O’Doherty, aka Reg Mombassa.
In the mid-1990s, Reg’s iconic Australian Jesus series for Mambo offered a strange, funny and bold take on Australian identity, suburbia and religion. Reg’s influence stretched beyond canvas into music too he was a founding member of the iconic Australian band Mental As Anything.
I remember seeing Mambo shirts growing up. I couldn’t afford one, but I never forgot the artwork.
Now, all these years later, to have an original Reg Mombassa hanging and sharing in my OWN gallery.
From remembering those Mambo shirts as a kid to now having the privilege of presenting an original work in a gallery I created — cute full circle moment.
The Australian Jesus with an Alien is part of The Black Canoe Birthday Collection — an original piece connected to an iconic moment in Australian art, design and popular culture.
