New at Aboriginal Bush Traders – Blak Brews

We’re excited to welcome Blak Brews to the ABT family!

Blak Brews is a First Nations-owned Australian tea company founded by Troy and Cerisa Benjamin. Their range celebrates native Australian ingredients, bringing flavours like lemon myrtle, strawberry gum, quandong, Kakadu plum and native mint together in unique tea blends.

We love that Blak Brews shares our passion for supporting First Nations businesses and showcasing the incredible native ingredients found across Australia.

With names inspired by the NT landscape such at Kakadu Sunset, Red Centre and Desert Sunrise, what's not to love!

The range is now available at Aboriginal Bush Traders in Darwin. Pop in, have a look and discover your new favourite brew. ☕️🌿

Or shop online via our website: https://aboriginalbushtraders.com/collections/blak-brews

We’re proud to support another First Nations-owned business and share their story with our customers.

These things are not just for the elders; we are also here to give examples and instruction to our children. So they can continue to give examples to their children in the future.

Bula’bula arts represents 65,000 years of unbroken culture and law at Ramingining. The art centre supports this by running artist, community and commissioned projects that keep cultural practice strong!

REPOST ARTIST PROFILE: Roaslind Yibardi, Tjarlirli Art

Rosalind Yibardi, 1950. Senior artist living in Kaltukatjara (Docker River)

We want to highlight the year it has been for Rosalind!

In the first photo you can see her sitting in front of her "Kaltukatjara rockholes" design which was used for the entrance of the brand-new Aged Care at Docker River.

She was part of the "Rising Stars" group exhibition at Outstation Gallery, the "Women's show" at Vivien Anderson Gallery, the Emerging artists exhibition as part of REVEALED with Aboriginal Art Centre Hub Western Australia at Pica Perth, a finalist at the Vincent Lingiari Award as part of Desert Mob, and she also has work in our current exhibition ‘Kapi” here at ABT.

Rosalind is a prolific painter, an almost-daily presence at her art centre and never misses a workshop at aged care on Fridays. Her kindness, good humour, rich knowledge and artistic prowess make her an essential member of Tjarlirli and Kaltukatjara Art.

REPOST: Jilamara

The old shed at Jilamara has been part of the art centre since its beginnings in the early 1980s, when it was used to turn ceremonial body paint designs into beautiful, wearable fabrics.

As textile work gradually gave way to painting in the 1990s, the shed then became a much-loved working space for artists including Kitty Kantilla Kutuwulumi, Pedro Wonaeamirri and Timothy Cook.

But the story of textiles at Jilamara didn’t end there. In 2018, at the request of long-standing member Raelene Kerinauia, screen-printing returned to the shed, with 26 new designs created. In 2024, nine historic designs from the art centre’s early years were brought back to life and launched at DAAF through a community-led fashion parade. The parade went on to receive the National Indigenous Fashion Award for Community Collaboration.

For years, community members had also been asking to see the incredible outfits made and worn around Milikapiti in the 1980s return. Now, sewing has come home to the screen-printing shed too. With support from NIAA through Remote Jobs and Economic Development, Jilamara has been able to bring more Tiwi staff into the studio and create the space, skills and opportunity to make these pieces again.

The program has also given the iconic old shed a new lease on life. It has been lovingly renovated, with insulation, air conditioning, improved lighting, bifold doors and a cleaner, more comfortable workspace.

After more than 40 years, the shed is once again buzzing with textile making — connecting Jilamara’s past with its future, and bringing a much-loved part of Tiwi art and community life back into the heart of the art centre.

We can't wait to see what they come up in this new fantastic space.
