Keeping Cygnet Tasmania's history fresh and alive We aim to open 7 days a week, but this is dependant on volunteer availability.

The Cygnet Living History Museum serves as both the repository for the area's history and also functions as the de facto Cygnet Information Centre. We rely solely on volunteers, all of whom are happy to help visitors with suggestions and directions. If you are interested in joining our merry band of volunteers, we'd love to hear from you! Drop in to our showroom for a visit (across the road from t

he IGA) or send us an email via [email protected]. If you would like to make an appointment in advance to ensure access, please email us with your preferred date and time. Our Vision is to empower our future through an ever-evolving connection with the past of the Port Cygnet area. Our Mission Statement: We collect, preserve and share the history of the Port Cygnet area, keeping it alive for future generations

It’s the 25th birthday of the Cygnet Living History Museum!
Over these years our local museum has collected a large amount of history of this area - photographs, books, oral histories etc – even two organs - and put on many different exhibitions. To celebrate our birthday the museum is inviting you to come in for a cuppa and biscuit and have a look around.
Have you always thought, “I must pop in to the museum” but never quite got round to it? This is your chance to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and chat with the wonderful volunteers who can tell you things you never knew about our town and the surrounding area. The comments in our visitors’ book are constantly positive and reflect so well on the museum volunteers who have kept our doors open for the past 25 years. Last year, we had over 2,000 visitors!
The museum was started in 2000 by a small group of women, led by May Salter who realised that so much history was going to the tip when older residents died and there was nowhere to keep their photographs and memories.
The first project was to document the houses that had been in Cygnet since 1900, followed by exhibitions on the early timber industry, boatbuilding, apples, including of course the Apple Festival, and more recently the New Settlers who took up land in the 1970s and 80s after the 1967 bushfire and the collapse of the apple industry. Throughout the 25 years the museum has been housed in the hall of the Uniting Church – a wonderful old building for which the museum is very grateful to the church.
You will be most welcome to visit the museum and help us celebrate this landmark birthday, Monday 24th November to Sunday 30th November, 11am to 3pm. Drop in for a cuppa and a piece of history!
