Neil Spencer (now 75) was born in Queenstown, New Zealand. It was from here that a love formed for the mountains, rivers, snow and climbing, and exploring the wonderland of the South Island began. High school in Oamaru and a scholarship to pre-earthquake University of Canterbury saw him begin an art teaching career that spanned about 50 years. Twenty-seven years followed in this profession in New

Zealand, liberally dotted with work for the New Zealand education ministry as an adviser, curriculum writer, author, examiner and finally as the first secondary school Art Inspector on the South Island. As an art practitioner, family man, teacher, lecturer and outdoors lover – life was full. Music, bands and sport of all kinds just made this life bigger and better. A move (back to teaching kids) happened in 1990, and after moving to Brisbane for two years, was offered a position at Cunnamulla State School out here in the Outback. During this period he taught nearly all subjects in the secondary curriculum and was awarded a Queensland Teacher of the Year recognition in 2004/2005. Seventeen years later, he retired and with partner Judy Stewart opened this family gallery and studio.
