🪷 Therapy I explore creative practices that invite everyday wonder, and are grounded in place, embodiment, and love for the textures and thresholds of the living world.

Art for me begins with the body, with sensation, touch, and the natural expression of hands meeting material. From there, it reaches outward to the textures of earth, the rhythm of tides, and the vastness of sky and stars, creating a dialogue between movement, matter, and meaning.

I had a wonderful time at the Fish Creek Teacosy Festival today. Not only was I playing trombone with my fabulous and supremely joyful band, Invy Horn Jam, but I finally found the courage to do my first improvised solo in public.

It was better than rehearsal because I landed in something free. There were wobbles, repetition, wrong notes — the whole gamut. But I finally didn’t care. I got out of my own way, turned off the inner critic, and blew some notes.

That’s the thing about improvisation. The science backs it up, but honestly you don’t need the science — you just need to have stood in front of people and felt the moment when you stop managing yourself and trying to get it right. It’s been described as a pathway to creativity — turn off your inner critic, get out of your way, and play. Oh, but first you have to show up. I almost didn’t today.

I drew my own version of a spider web this week, because I wanted to feel my different strands were all part of a meaningful whole, but it ended up messy, smudged, and all over my hands.

I think this new website does a better job, sharing the different aspects of my work in a more coherent whole. All under the banner of Crayons and Stuff — my therapy informs my art making informs my design informs my embodiment and connections to place.

Living Space too is shared more fully now, with more on our stories, visions, and exhibiting artists — with .mcdevitt.35

If this calls you in some way I hope you will explore at least one those threads, following the original line if you wish or finding your own spiral along the way. And I would love to hear how it lands.

See new link in comment or bio.
