Out Today! - Treasure & Dirt was filmed on location in Coober Pedy. The six-part drama used our outback town's distinct opal-mining landscape and underground living environments as its primary backdrop. Production for the series also took place in the Flinders Ranges and across locations in Adelaide.

Premieres TONIGHT, Sunday 19 July, at 8.30pm on ABC TV. It has also just dropped on ABC iView.

And honestly? We're fine with it. 🐦

These two were spotted cruising the plains just outside town, Breakaways on the horizon, not a care in the world. Emus have had the run of this country a lot longer than any of us — we just moved in underground and started digging.

Come see who really runs Coober Pedy, then head below the surface with us at Umoona Opal Mine & Museum to discover what 150 million years of outback history looks like up close. 💎

Straight from the underground to your hands 💍

Most of the opal in our showroom was born right here in Coober Pedy — the opal capital of the world. Solid stones, doublets, one-of-a-kind settings… no two are ever the same, just like the fire inside them.

Take the mine tour, wander the museum, then find the piece that catches your eye (or catches the light 👀).

Open 7 days. Experience the Underground.

You can't park there, mate.

Well… someone did. About 40 years ago. She's still there — rusting quietly out on the diggings while the desert slowly claims her, one dust storm at a time.

Out here in Coober Pedy, cars don't get towed. They get retired. 😅

Come see the town that lives below — real opal, real mine tunnels, and a whole lot of characters (some with four wheels).

There’s opal hiding in them mullock heaps — you just need the right light to see it.

Grab a black light torch from Umoona Opal Mine (buy or hire) and head out to Coober Pedy’s safe public noodling areas, where fossicking is free and open to everyone. Under UV, the ground comes alive — that telltale glow is how you spot the good stuff the naked eye walks straight past.

Not sure where to start? Our staff will point you to the best public noodling spots in town.

Pop in, gear up, and go find your flash of colour.
