It began life in 1889 as a modern banking chambers and manager's residence of the Queensland National Bank. Separate buildings for the manager included a stable, tack room and buggy shelter. The bank used the building as it's chambers for 53 years. In 1942, a Mr

Alex Smith bought the building and used it as a residence until his death. His daughter, Mrs Claude Young then turned it into a boarding house. In 1973, the Charleville & District Historical and Cultural Society was formed and bought the building, setting aside the manager's office as the society's office. The banking chamber's "front room" houses a host of items from the past and the old bank vault is used to store precious books, maps, newspapers and records of our history. The main bedroom and dining room are furnished in the gracious ways of an earlier era. There are five beautiful marble fireplaces throughout the building. We are staffed by a small number of volunteers and we open seven days a week! A wide range of souvenirs are available for purchase in the Museum.
