🏺Remembering Colin Levy🏺

A significant figure in the Australian pottery scene who died recently aged 92, leaving behind an incredible legacy of work.

Col Levy was an Australian ceramic artist whose work reflects a deep engagement with both local materials and Asian pottery traditions. Originally trained as a manual arts teacher, he studied pottery at the National Art School in Sydney in 1956 before apprenticing with Ivan McMeekin at Sturt Pottery, Mittagong. In the mid-1960s, Levy established his own kiln and studio at Bowen Mountain in the Blue Mountains. His ceramics, often influenced by Japanese tea wares, reveal a refined understanding of glazing and firing processes. Levy’s work is represented in major public collections across Australia.

✨Sharing images from a very special time at the opening of BIYAL last Saturday.

What an incredible turn out of artists, mob, community and supporters for what is an absolutely stunning exhibition, curated with care by Uncle Rick Nelson, Kerry Douglas, Hape Kiddle, Dan Mitchell and the Guildford Biyal Project Team.

The Dja Dja Wurrung Group acknowledge Dja Dja Wurrung People, for their knowledge and guidance given to protect the spirit of the Guildford Biyal. Dumarr (thank you) to the artists, DJAARA Timbers, DUMAWUL, Nalderun Education Aboriginal Corporation, Mount Alexander Shire Council, Regional Arts Victoria, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) and the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA).

Exhibition runs until 29 November, we look forward to seeing you at CAM

📯Please join us for the official opening of BIYAL tomorrow at 11am

In February 2024, the Biyal dropped a significant limb. This was a pivotal event for Dja Dja Wurrung People and the broader community.

The DJAARA Malamiya (Cultural Heritage) and Galk-galk Dhelkunya (to heal/to care for, many trees) teams ensured timber was protected and transported to a safe location – allowing time for Dja Dja Wurrung People to determine the next steps.

In the days following the limb drop, many came to spend time with the tree – and the community's connection to the Biyal has shaped and sustained this project.

Since then, Uncle Rick Nelson and Dja Dja Wurrung People have guided how the timber has been shared - with community, and with those commissioned to create works for BIYAL.

Exhibition runs from 22 August to 29 November 2026.

📯Just under one month left to enter the Len Fox painting Award for 2026!

Presented by the Castlemaine Art Museum, the Len Fox Painting Award is a biennial acquisitive painting prize and is awarded to a living Australian artist to commemorate the life and work of Emanuel Phillips Fox (1865–1915), the uncle of Len Fox, partner of benefactor Mona Fox. The Len Fox Painting Award and generous acquisitive cash prize of $50,000 is funded through a bequest from Mona Fox.

Open to all painters Australia wide.

🗣️ Happening tomorrow at 2pm!

From Mimicry To Autonomy - A Performance By Rhett D’Costa

Join Rhett D’Costa for a performance in three acts in response to the photographic works in his exhibition.

Accompanied by readings from his own writing, the artist will move from the pictorial space of the photographs to the performative space of the gallery, signalling a shift from colonial acts of mimicry to claim a sense of representational autonomy.
