Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum Our museum is about recognising the role Carnarvon played in the NASA manned space program and OTC Satellite Earth Station. Suitable for all ages.

Self funded and completely run by volunteers. Phase One officially opened on June 23 by Buzz Aldrin (American Astronaut). Phase Two opened by Andy Thomas (Australian born Astronaut September 2014. Phase Three opened in April 2016. by Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan. Phase Four opened August 2021 which houses Australia’s only full size Lunar Module mock-up. Our "Apollo Experience" is a video & surround sound launch of Apollo 11 in our full size capsule mock-up. Not to be missed! There are many hands on displays, 50 seat theatre showing a number of short Carnarvon space related films, planetarium, interactive computers, memorabilia and much more.

The oldest working machine on the Moon has no batteries, no wires and no moving parts. It has been switched on since 1969 and it still answers when we call.

On July 21, 1969, Buzz Aldrin walked a short distance from the lunar module carrying what looked like a briefcase. He put it on the gray dust, aimed it at Earth, and leveled it by eye using a tiny bubble level and the shadow of a stick. Then he walked away. Nobody has touched it since.

That little panel holds 100 corner cube prisms, and every one of them has a strange gift. Fire light into it from any angle at all and the light comes straight back the way it came. So when an observatory in New Mexico shoots a laser pulse at the Sea of Tranquility, a handful of photons come home about 2.5 seconds later.

From those photons we pinned down something scientists had long suspected. The Moon is quietly running away from us at roughly 3.8 centimeters a year, dragged outward by our own tides. Those same laser shots are now among the sharpest tests of Einstein's general relativity ever made.

Our phones die in three years. This thing has kept working for fifty seven, alone, in vacuum, on another world.
