Age Of Fishes Museum Canowindra

Age Of Fishes Museum Canowindra Fossils older than dinosaurs, beautiful gardens & interactive indoor and outdoor displays for all the family. Large groups please contact us to make a booking.

Well stocked retail store with fossils, gifts, educational toys and local produce. The Age Of Fishes Museum houses a collection of Devonian Fish Fossils. This is the only dedicated collection in the Southern Hemisphere!

150 million years before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, almost all backboned animals lived in water, not on land. This was the Devonian Period or the "Age Of Fishes". A chance find n

ear Canowindra NSW in 1956, and a major excavation of the same site in 1993, uncovered a remarkable fossil site. The site contained well preserved remains of thousands of bizarre, long extinct fishes encased in bony armour, other fishes with lungs and huge predators with crocodile like jaws, many of them new to science. The most important fossil treasures are now on display at the Age Of Fishes Museum in Canowindra. This unique "window in time" allows visitors to study what happened in Canowindra 360 million years ago. The fossils are supplemented by permanent exhibitions, gift shop, geological time walk, sculpture garden and outdoor picnic areas. There are many hands on activities in the Museum such as the education den, giant games board, huge floor puzzles and fossil dig pits. Individuals and small groups are welcome between 10am and 4pm, 7 days a week with the exception of Christmas Day and Anzac Day morning. Other times are by appointment.

As with any great escape, we recommend avoiding peak travel periods, allowing a little extra time, and, if you can, adding an extra night to your stay. Because once you breathe in the fresh country air and experience the warmth and hospitality of regional NSW, you won’t want to leave.

Figuratively speaking, of course, the Central West is embracing the chill as winter approaches. There’s a crispness in the air, and while the temperatures have dropped, the last of those stunning autumn leaves are still clinging on, adding bursts of colour to the landscape.

Winter in the region offers plenty to explore, from inspiring art exhibitions and immersive truffle hunts to glowing fire festivals and, if you’re lucky, a light dusting of snow.

So head out west this season and discover something special.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK | Meet Rob

This National Volunteer Week (18–24 May), Council is celebrating the volunteers who help our community thrive.

Rob is one of those dedicated volunteers, supporting Cabonne Home Support and Community Transport services. For almost three and a half years, he has been a committed Meals on Wheels NSW (MOW) volunteer, and for over 12 months has also contributed to Community Transport.

Rob plays a vital role delivering meals to residents across Canowindra, Eugowra, Yeoval, Manildra, Cumnock and Molong. On Tuesdays, he travels further afield delivering frozen meals, while on Thursdays he focuses on local deliveries closer to home. He also generously gives his time transporting community members to medical appointments in Cowra and Orange when needed.

Rob was inspired to volunteer by his love of working with people.

“I like working with people and it makes my day to talk to people and make them happy,” he says.

For Rob, the most rewarding part of volunteering is the connections he builds along the way.

“Meeting people, sitting and talking to them, making friends and listening to their stories” are moments he values most.

Through his volunteering, Rob provides more than just a service, he offers companionship, care and connection.

“Sometimes I am the only person they see in a week,” he says. “So I think it’s pretty valuable to be able to sit and talk to them if I can.”

Council sincerely thanks Rob, and all our volunteers, for the care, kindness and connection they bring to our community every day.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK | Meet Judy

In celebration of National Volunteer Week, we’re proud to recognise the incredible people who give their time to support our community.

Judy is a Cabonne Home Support and Community Transport Volunteer driver who has been supporting residents across Cabonne for over 14 years, helping them get to appointments, shopping, and social outings.

“I started volunteering when Margot twisted my arm while I was working at Dr Guerin’s, they needed volunteers, so I signed up 14 years ago. Wow… and I’m still driving.”

Along the way, Judy has found the most rewarding part of volunteering is the connection she builds with the people she supports.

“It’s the contact with the clients, chatting with them about their lives and being a companion for them, as some clients don’t have anyone else. It’s a very rewarding role.”

For many in the community, this service is essential.

“As the clients say, if it wasn’t for Community Transport, they wouldn’t be able to get out of their homes to attend appointments, get groceries, or go on social bus trips.”

Judy’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference volunteers make every day, not just through practical support, but through care, connection and companionship.

Thank you, Judy, and all our volunteers, for the important role you play in keeping our community connected.
