Australian Dinosaur Day! 🦖🇦🇺

On this very day in 1903, William Ferguson, a geologist surveying Victoria’s Bass Coast, discovered the first documented Australian dinosaur fossil - Cape Patterson Claw.

This claw is now believed to have been a claw of a large megaraptoran, similar to Australovenator, our “Southern Hunter” of Queensland (and probably the deadliest Aussie you’ve never met🫣).

On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me…
12 T-rexes, 11 Australotitans, 10 Triceratops, 9 Deinonychus, 8 Ankylosaurus, 7 Carnotaurus, 6 Kunbarrasaurus, 5 Australovenetors, 4 Allosaurus, 3 Camarasaurus, 2 Stegosaurus and a Paracyclotosaurus in a swampy tree. 🌲🎁

The T-rex, aka Tyrannosaurus Rex, aka the “Tyrant Lizard King” is the fiercest meat-eating dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous North America (69-66 million years ago).

Despite not being the longest carnivorous dinosaur (Spinosaurus), it is certainly the heaviest, with an average weight of 10 tonnes, making it one of the biggest, and strongest predators to have ever roamed the earth. Due to their massive size and large head, T.Rex has an incredibly in tune senses and a strong bite force, of approximately 6 tonnes of force, the equivalent of an African Elephant falling on top of their target with each bite!🦖

NDM WISHES YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS! 🎄 🦖

Australotitan, the “Southern Titan”, is a large Late Cretaceous (105-90 million years ago) Australian Titanosaur from the Winton Formation, Queensland.

This dinosaur grew up to lengths of 30 metres and 70 tonnes, with a femur similar in size to other behemoths such as “Dreadnoughtus”, indicating that Australia was home to some of the largest animals to have ever walked the earth. The validity of this dinosaur as a species is in question, as some scientists believe it to be synonymous with another titanosaur called “Diamantinasaurus”. Regardless, Australotitan represents one of the largest Australian dinosaurs till date.

Pay a visit to NDM this holiday to stand next to our ‘juvenile’ Australotitan in the garden. Just imagine this dinosaur in full adult size!

Triceratops, the “Three-Horned Face”, is a large herbivorous dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period (68-66 million years ago), of North America.

They are famous for their large and ornate frills, and their 3 large horns that adorn their face. 🦚 Triceratops was the preferred prey of Tyrannosaurus Rex, and as such may have forced T.Rex into an ‘evolutionary arms race”, forcing T.Rex to get bigger and stronger, as Triceratops gradually grew bigger and tougher reaching 8 metres and 8 tonnes. Triceratops used their horns less like a battering ram, and more as defensive spears, piercing predators who got too close! 🗡

8 Deinonychus, 7 Ankylosaurus, 6 Carnotaurus, 5 Kunbarrasaurus, 4 Australovenator, 3 Camarasaurus, 2 Stegosaurus and a Paracyclotosaurus in the swampy tree!! 🌲🎁

Deinonychus the “Terrible Claw”, is a large dromeosaurid from the Cretaceous (115-90 million years ago), North America.

Their scientific name refers to their large, sickle-like claw on their second toe, which may have been used to kick or gouge predator or prey alike, similar to modern day cassowaries or emus!

* This dinosaur is from the same group that includes velociraptors and other feathered dinosaurs. The Deinonychus was the original inspiration for the Velociraptors from Jurassic Park, however the author of the original books switched their names to make the raptors appear more ferocious. 🧐
