This exhibition explores the song of the extinct huia, a culturally significant bird from Aotearoa. The artist plays musical notation of huia calls on 19th century audio technology at sites where the bird was spotted, observing how living birds respond to a vanished voice, highlighting relationships that have existed for millennia.

Sha Sarwari's installation draws on the metaphor of the moth’s fatal attraction to light, to reflect the precarious and often tragic realities of the refugee experience.

Moths also suggest persistence, faith, and an instinctive movement toward light. In this sense, refugees are often compelled toward the perceived promise of the West β€” imagined as a place of safety, dignity, and freedom from war, persecution, and political instability.

Yet for many refugees, this promised refuge becomes another site of suffering. Escaping violence and human rights abuses, they are often met with political hostility, detention, discrimination, racialised media narratives, and social exclusion. The β€œlight” that once symbolised hope can instead become a source of trauma and erasure.

Thread replaces ink, not as substitution but as transformation. It does not record knowledge; it holds its pressure. Across netted surfaces, these stitched pages form a field of quiet insistence where visibility is not granted but constructed through repetition, care, and survival.

The ruled line shifts. It is no longer a boundary for thought but a horizon, another form of education carried through presence: through acts of sustaining life, through the subtle transmission of endurance in spaces where formal learning has been constrained.

Does this spark a memory?

Heidi Schoenheimer's π΄π‘Ÿπ‘œπ‘’π‘›π‘‘ π»π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘’ presents a series of paintings that capture everyday scenes and quiet personal moments, depicting the people and places around her.

Many of these scenes are drawn from the local area. Schoenheimer is interested in small gestures, pockets of light, colour and the quiet drama of daily life.
