The Aviation Heritage Museum provides a unique museum experience of civilian and military aviation through its extraordinary aviation displays, helpful guides and special tours. The Museum's talented volunteers have designed, donated and built a truly amazing array of aviation displays that include 30 aircraft and thousands of artefacts. From the helpful gift shop attendants to the meticulous restorers, the Museum’s hundreds of volunteers have truly built one of the most unique museums in the Southern Hemisphere or even the World. The Royal Australian Air Force Association along with community assistance from sponsors, visitors, and friends of the Museum makes the Museum one of the top self funded Museums in Australia.

Can you guess which aircraft we’re in? 👀✈️

Here’s a clue: you’re looking inside one of the most famous heavy bombers of the Second World War.

It’s our Avro Lancaster, where navigation was no simple task. Lancaster crews used systems including Gee, an early radio navigation aid that helped navigators calculate the aircraft’s position from signals transmitted by ground stations. Later, systems such as H2S radar could even help crews identify coastlines, rivers and cities on the ground below.

Some aircraft became famous for speed, but the C-47 Dakota became legendary for being dependable.

During WWII, Dakotas carried troops, equipment and supplies into some of the world's most challenging environments. From paratrooper operations over Normandy to supply missions across the Himalayas and operations throughout the Pacific.

The A65-124 Dakota on display at our museum, was the last C-47 Dakota acquired by the RAAF, holding a very special place in the hearts of many aviators. ✈️

Bring STEM learning to life at the Aviation Heritage Museum. ✈️

Our school programs connect classroom learning with real aircraft, engineering and aviation history, giving students the chance to explore science, physics and technology in a completely different way.

One teacher described their visit as “a fantastic day” of hands-on learning, with the experience even inspiring one student to start thinking about a future as a pilot.

Curriculum-linked programs are available for students of all ages.

On this day in 2001, Operation Slipper began, marking the start of Australia’s military contribution to the war in Afghanistan.

Over the two decades that followed, approximately 40,000 Australians served across the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force in Afghanistan and the wider Middle East.

Today, we recognise their service and remember the 47 Australians recorded on the national Roll of Honour who lost their lives as a result of their service. We also acknowledge the lasting impact of the conflict on veterans and their families, and the strength, sacrifice and commitment shown by all who served.

Our own RAF Tornado GR4, ZG791, flew operations over Afghanistan in 2013, offering one tangible connection to this significant chapter in modern military history. Twenty-five years from the start of the war, we remember and reflect. 🕊️

On this day in 1942, four RAAF airmen lost their lives when their Avro Anson crashed near Mokine, west of Northam.

A memorial now stands at the site as a lasting tribute to their service and sacrifice.

On Sunday 4 October, members of our team are joining a memorial service in Mokine to mark the anniversary and remember the people behind the aircraft and stories we preserve. 🕊️
