Haydn’s London | Australian Haydn Ensemble

This Saturday, the Broken Hill City Art Gallery welcomes the Australian Haydn Ensemble for Haydn’s London.

One of Australia’s foremost exponents of Classical-era music, the Australian Haydn Ensemble performs on period instruments, bringing audiences closer to the sound worlds the composers themselves knew.

Featuring works for String Quartet & Flute by Haydn and Beethoven, alongside music by Elena Kats-Chernin and Marin Marais, Haydn’s London traces the wonders of chamber music across more than two centuries – from birdsong and butterflies to moments of reflection and celebration.

Entries Now Open | 2026 Maari Ma Indigenous Art Awards

Presented by Broken Hill City Art Gallery in partnership with Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation and West Darling Arts, the Awards celebrate and showcase the creativity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists living across the Maari Ma / West Darling Arts region.

Artists are invited to submit up to two works across a range of categories, with prizes recognising established, emerging and young artists.

Entries close: Friday, 23 October 2026
Opening & Award Announcements: Friday, 30 October 2026
Exhibition: 30 October 2026 – 7 February 2027

Pro Hart Outback Art Prize Finalist 2026

‘This artwork portrays the iconic sandstone sculpture Bajo el Sol Jaguar (Under the Jaguar Sun) by Mexican artist Antonio Nava Tirado, symbolising the duality of day and night.

Set against the gathering force of an Outback storm, the sculpture’s grounded, timeless presence contrasts with the raw energy of nature. Dark clouds churn across the sky as lightning illuminates the rugged desert terrain, capturing a moment between calm and chaos.

The work explores themes of endurance, transformation, and the dialogue between culture and landscape, honouring both the sculpture’s cultural significance and the powerful natural environment that surrounds it.’

Pro Hart Outback Art Prize Finalist 2026

‘I’ve always loved the Australian landscape. There’s really nothing like being out in it – you can try to imagine it or recreate it, but it never quite matches the real thing. I need to actually be there, surrounded by it, to understand it.

In my work, I play around with light and shade, because that’s where things start to get interesting. If it all comes together, you can end up with a bit of mystery – something that draws you in without giving everything away.’

Pro Hart Outback Art Prize Finalist 2026

‘Dry season reflects the harsher rhythms of the Australian Outback through four isolated trees set against an ochre ground suggestive of heat, dust and distance. Stripped of foliage and surrounding landscape, the trees become markers of survival within an environment defined by scarcity and exposure.

The painting speaks to endurance, adaptation and the quiet resilience embedded within the Australian environment. It invites reflection on the beauty and severity of the outback, and on the living forms that persist within it.’

Pro Hart Outback Art Prize Finalist 2026

‘Thorny Devil is a ceramic sculpture that reimagines the small spiny lizard of the Australian desert as both creature and terrain: an inhabitant and embodiment of the outback.

Its thorny, dry-cracked topographical surface, marked by ant nests, the creature’s main sustenance, evokes the desert ground and the hidden activity of ants below.

The work invites reflection on adaptation, survival, ecological interdependence and on understanding the desert not as a passive backdrop, but as something lived, carried and continually shaped through the lives of its creatures.’

We’re excited to see 2026 Pro Hart Outback Art Prize finalist Jarrod Prince competing on Portrait Artist of the Year Australia this Sunday!

A Broken Hill artist and animator, Jarrod is also a familiar face at the Gallery, regularly sharing his skills through our workshops and programs.

You can also see a selection of Jarrod’s practice portraits, created in preparation for the show, in our Gallery window as part of the Broken Hill Art Exchange Red Dirt Blue Skies Artist Trail.

We look forward to seeing Jarrod take part in Portrait Artist of the Year Australia, airing this Sunday at 7.30pm on ABC and available to stream on ABC iview.

Congratulations to all of the 2026 Regional Showcase finalists, whose creative works transform waste and recycled materials into art while exploring this year’s theme, Shrink Your Footprint.

Pro Hart Outback Art Prize Finalist 2026

‘As a young Barkinji boy, I grew up swimming and playing on the banks of the Darling River. This painting tells the story of the river, whose water flow has been declining for the past 50 years and which has experienced devastating periods of low flow, or no flow, since the 1990s.

You are life, my Darling. Generously, you give life while we offer you almost nothing in return.

Thinking of you is easy now, as I become grey and aged, often closing my eyes just to lie next to you under a sky covered in gold. Never wanting to feel your absence or experience life without you: “I love you, my Darling. Please don’t leave, for I fear that my tears could never replace your absence.”’
