Hands on Art and Substation Gallery is an artist-run, not-for-profit community organisation in Paddington, Brisbane.

We run classes for kids and adults, and also have a registry of local artists, an exhibition space for hire, and hold special events! Hands on Art is an artist run initiative, not-for-profit and charity providing programs and services that inspire creativity, personal growth, connections to nature, community enrichment and cultural diversity. The heritage listed Paddington Substation is the home o

f Hands On Art and it's where we currently have our Kids Do Art Workshops and art workshops for adults on a regular basis. It is also where we house our Substation Gallery which is an artist run space available as venue hire, gallery space or a pop up studio.

All participants have dropped off their artworks at the Substation and we are preparing for our 2023 Incubator opening on the 16th of September, Saturday! Come show you support - all are welcome!

Had a super fun class telling stories about giant beluga whales swimming in the sky, magic teapots, fashionable monkeys and crazy hairdos! Each of us created our own wacky worlds where anything was possible, full of secrets and hidden treasures.

We are doing call outs for the 2023 Incubator exhibition .
Year 11 & 12 students as well as first year tertiary students are encouraged to apply! Applications are open now!
..Ofc I have to painstakingly cross all 10ths out on these posters and replace them with 1sts 🙄.
Applications close on the 25th August

Remember prizes include art gift packs as well as a residency at the substation and a solo show!

The opening night is on 16th Sep. We hope to see your art on our walls!

Our Story

Hands on Art is an artist-run, not-for-profit organisation that aims to inspire creativity, personal growth, connections to nature, community enrichment and cultural diversity. We run various programs and events throughout the year, including kids art classes for different ages, adult art workshops, and Saturday workshops.

Hands on Art’s home is the historical Paddington Substation. This is where we hold our classes and workshops, and also where we have our Substation Gallery which is an artist-run space available as venue hire, gallery space or a pop up studio.
