Explaining flashbacks using the arm wrestle metaphor

The analogy of an arm wrestle can help explain the process that occurs during dissociative flashbacks.

When experiencing a flashback it is as if an arm wrestle between the past and the present is occurring in the brain.

Memories from the past are trying to push their attention back to the past,
so what they need to do is help their brain ‘win’ the arm wrestle by pushing back the other way, making the present ‘stronger’ than the past.

This can be done by enhancing sensory stimuli in the present, such as focusing on an intense taste, to remind them:

-where they are,
-that they are in the present, and
-that they are safe in this moment.

The arm wrestle metaphor is included in the :

Kelly Mahlers new blog has a really clear description of how to support the body to learn something new. This is a great example of how predictive processing works.

(Although Kelly's blog does not refer to this concept).

NEW FREE BLOG! Trauma-informed “good practices” give us an important foundation. But how do we get curious about what the individual body in front of us actually needs? In our newest blog, we explore how interoception can help us think more deeply about what the body has learned and how that learning may shape what feels supportive now.

Make your own Felt Stress Ball

Making your own felt stress ball can be a useful strategy to get the colour and look that you would like.

Making felt stress balls can also be a group activity

Method 1: Wet Felting (Soapy Water)
This is the most popular way to make soft, round felt balls in batches, often used for garlands or rugs.
• Difficulty: Very easy.
• Time: 10–15 minutes per ball.
• How to do it:
1. Pull off a loose piece of wool roving (unspun wool fibers) and roll it tightly into a rough ball shape.
2. Dip the wool into a bowl of warm water mixed with a few drops of dish soap or gentle soap.
3. Gently roll the wet wool between the palms of your hands using very light pressure at first—like holding a fragile egg—so it does not fall apart.
4. As the outer fibers start to catch and form a "skin," gradually apply more pressure and roll faster.
5. Dip it back into the warm water if it dries out.
6. Once firm and dense, rinse the ball in clean cold water to remove the soap, then let it air dry overnight.

Too often, FND struggles to find a disciplinary home with specialists taking ownership over the care of people with FND. Why? the experts are still working out where it should sit. The symptoms and presentation involve neurological symptoms and the care needs to address the symptoms and the underlying risk factors and triggers.
