This Anzac Day my family are commemorating and paying tribute to my Grandfather Archibald John Walker. Archie enlisted in the 7th Battalion AIF on 1st September 1914, leaving his home and family in Bright.
On 25th April 1915 members of the AIF landed in Gallipoli, Turkey in what was to become ANZAC Cove. On that day Archie was wounded in action, sustaining gunshot wounds to his face, legs and hand. Archie’s eye was surgically removed in hospital in Alexandria. He was discharged to the hospital ship the Letitia on 7th May 1915, travelling to London where he was admitted, on the 20th May to the 2nd Western General Hospital Manchester. After 86 days in hospital Archie returned to Australia on 8th October 1915 on the hospital ship the Suevic arriving in Australia on 19th November 1915.
Archie returned to his family and home in Bright.
He was formally discharged on 5th July 1916. Reason for discharge medically unfit, disability, loss of right eye.
Archie died on 2nd July 1939, leaving his wife Agnes and 8 children.
On Anzac Day around 50 of Archie’s Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and GG Grandchildren will gather at Archie’s home in Bakers Gully after attending the Dawn Service and the Commemoration.
We, Archie’s descendants, plan to lay a wreath at the Anzac Commemoration this Saturday. The G G Grandchildren will lay the wreath.
This is a very important day for our family and we are ensuring our children and their children carry on honouring our Grandfather and all who fought. Thank you for taking the time to share our story. Eleanor Pike née Walker
