Art Farm Birchs Bay

Art Farm Birchs Bay OPEN 365 DAYS. Dogs on leads welcome. Our sculpture trail is 2km, bush track, with over 35 artworks

Art Farm Birchs Bay (AFBB) is a not-for-profit association established to foster engagement between community, artists, art and the landscape. AFBB is situated at Five Bob Farm, an innovative working farm in the south Channel and home to Diemen Pepper. A visit to the Art Farm includes meandering through fields of Tasmanian native pepper, orchards and an extensive kitchen garden. Art Farm Birchs Ba

y hosts exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops and the renowned Sculpture Trail - an annual sculpture exhibition featuring Tasmanian and interstate artists with support by private sponsorship and local government. Art Farm Birchs Bay is based in lutruwita (Tasmania), approx 35 minutes south of nipaluna (Hobart) and 10 minutes south of putalina (Oyster Cove). We acknowledge the traditional owners of this land, the palawa people, and pay deep respect to elders past and present, to the many Aboriginal people that did not make elder status, and to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community that continue to care for Country.

Each year around twenty sculptures are exhibited on the trail - We ask people to make a small donation to help keep the track maintained and to leave us a vote for their favourite piece, so we can award a prize for the Popular Choice.

Also dating back to 2006, Marcus Tatton’s Benchstack is another sculptural bench you can still see today after, quietly commanding the landscape and continuing to capture the attention of all who pass by.

Created by an accomplished sculptor with a deep understanding of wood as both material and collaborator, the work reflects a thoughtful exploration of the connections between people and the natural world.

Another sculptural bench from our first year in 2006 was Trevor Dennis’s The “Once upon a time” Chair.

While this sculpture can no longer be seen today, like all good stories, we hope it still lives on in the memories of those who discovered it 20 years ago.

METAMORPHOSIS by Paul Warren, 2006

This one is still here to come and see – while it’s no longer safe to sit on, you can still admire its sculptural beauty.

This May marks 20 years since it all began 🌿

Back in 2006, the very first sculpture trail exhibition opened here at the farm under the name Benchmarking Birchs Bay. The idea was simple and thoughtful — a trail of sculptural benches, offering visitors not just a place to pause and rest, but a chance to connect with art in the landscape. Set up by local artist Wendy Edwards and proprietor Chris Read, the trail quickly became a beloved part of the community.

Those early works invited people to slow down, sit, and take it all in — the views, the creativity, and the experience of being outdoors.

Two decades on, that same spirit still shapes what we do. And it all started with a bench and a beautiful idea ✨

Did you know that Five Bob Farm, the home of Art Farm Birchs Bay, was initially named Fleurtys?

The Fleurtys name traces back to Charles Fleurty, a convict sawyer who arrived in Tasmania during the early years of British settlement. He worked at the Government sawing establishment at Birch’s Bay in the 1820s, and several local landmarks now bear his name, including Fleurty’s Point and Fleurty’s Creek.

You may remember visiting Fleurty’s café. We now call this beautiful place The Venue which is available to hire for private events. Contact if you'd like to learn more about The Venue.

There’s a sense of movement you can almost feel in this one 🐇

On loan from legendary mosaic sculptor Wendy Edwards, this striking sculpture captures a hare mid-leap—suspended in that fleeting moment between ground and flight. Every fragment of mosaic seems to carry energy, light, and motion.
Set against the natural landscape, it feels alive.

It’s a beautiful reminder of how art can hold a moment still—while somehow still letting it run free. Come by and experience it for yourself.

Haven’t visited in a while? This might be your reminder to come back for a wander 🌿

Spending time with art in nature is never quite the same twice. The light shifts, the seasons change—and so does the way each piece feels in its surroundings. Even familiar works can take on a whole new life.

From time to time, we also move pieces within our permanent collection, creating new conversations between artwork and landscape. That means each visit holds the potential for something unexpected.

Here’s Sally Brown’s work Vortex, acquired in 2008, captured in three different positions—each one offering its own perspective and mood.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mums out there!

Why not visit for a gentle wander through the farm and bush, breathe in the fresh air, and explore our lush veggie patch. It’s the perfect way to reconnect, unwind, and share something simple and beautiful together.

While you’re here, stop by the produce pantry and pick up a bunch of stunning iris flowers — a thoughtful, locally grown gift she’ll truly love 💐

Make a day of it. Good company, peaceful surroundings, and a little bit of farm magic. We’d love to see you.
