In the 1930s and 1940s Autograph Books were widely used to record autographs of 'famous' people and of school and Scout colleagues. These pages were taken from the book of John Wass, a well known Leader in Brunswick District who was a soldier in World War II and his friends sent him this book filled with photos and best wishes for his service to Australia, as well as cryptic comments - 'and while I have been thinking, a fly has drank the ink!'

Prior to the New Design for Scouts in 1972, members of Scout section Patrols wore their 'colours' as a shoulder knot on their sleeve. This one is the Kangaroo- Red & Grey.
In 1958, there were over 40 different combinations of patrols animals listed - many from the UK and not found in Australia (Badger, Mopoke, Peewit, etc). There were also Australian animals (Crow, Eagle, Hawk, Koala, Platypus, etc). Many of the names were recorded on patrol boxes, books and in patrol registers.
Many leaders were kept busy cutting strips from rolls of ribbon available from the Scout Shop. After 1972 these were replaced by an embroidered badge.

War Savings Bonds were popular during WWII. Many Scout Groups purchased Bonds from their funds to support the War effort and lift the spirits on the home front and fighting forces.
Certificates were awarded to Groups by the Federal Government and we see here in November 1940 thanks given to 1st Alphington Group (still operating today).

Rovers were an integral part of Jamborees from the early days (as they still are today). They provided much need labour in setting up the campsite and running the activities. For the 1948/49 Jamboree at Wonga Park (later Clifford Park) we see a patrol of Phillip Rovers from St. Kild,a as they prepared to give Service to Scouting at the event.

The Lion Patrol Log Book of 5th Caulfield Troop is a fantastic snapshot of a patrol's journey from 1938-1947. This page from 1942 celebrates ten years of their hall and the send off to an 18 year old Scout to WWII (remember Senior Scouts didn't commence until 1947). Streamers, stunts and paper aeroplanes were part of a night with lots of eats as part of the commemorations.

Remembering Colonel Eyrle George Lister DSO VD, the 1st Chief Scoutmaster (Commissioner) of Victorian Scouting in 1909. The Brighton Cemetorians have an ongoing project of a flag commemoration service each year to honour returned service persons buried at Brighton Cemetery.
As Scouting has strong links to the traditions of the Anzac's, this was a great opportunity to honour one of our own people with a flag recognising his service to his country.

The 1st Kew Scout Troop put in some useful practice at physical fire drill and rescue
work in preparation for their coming concert and display. On September 21 1911,
the troop will parade at the fire station, where they will receive instruction in
fire drill and rescue work. from Mr. Cross, the officer in charge.
The Kew Fire Brigade had hand-drawn fire appliances up until 1919 when a motorised
vehicle was purchased. The Walton Street fire station from 1893 was replaced by Bedford Road station.

All Scouts were expected to take a sewing kit to camp to replace buttons and sew tears to clothing. These were simply kits, often sold at The Scout Shop as a part of camp kit. Of course they were instructed from Cub age to carry out these repairs and also sew on badges earned. We guess this task now falls to mum or perhaps the local clothing repair store?
