Discover Women and the Law, a new short film exploring women’s experiences of law and justice in Beechworth.

From women running businesses on the goldfields to those appearing before the courts, the film shares stories of women connected to the Kelly family, Elizabeth Scott, and local women who signed the 1891 petition for voting rights.

Screened in the Courthouse’s historic law library, it offers a fresh perspective on Beechworth’s past.

Join us THIS SUNDAY at the Burke Museum for a talk by special guest speaker Oskar Lindenmayer celebrating the eminent international geologist, E.J. Dunn.
An unsung hero of Beechworth’s history, Dunn's recently acquired specimen cabinet will be revealed and the Museum’s sapphire will also be highlighted.
Stay-on for light refreshments and an opportunity to mingle, and chat further about E. J. Dunn’s legacy.

Oskar Lindenmayer is Collection Manager of Mineralogy and Petrology at Museums Victoria Research Institute and is responsible for managing Victoria’s State collections of minerals, gemstones, rocks, ores, meteorites, and tektites.

We had some wonderful new species discovered in our first CURIOUS CREATURES session at the museum on Monday!

The second session is on TODAY from 1-3pm, and there will be one more session on Friday from 1-3pm.

🐨CURIOUS CREATURES AT THE MUSEUM!

🦉Animal lovers of all ages are invited to visit the Burke Museum these holidays for 3 free* drop-in creative sessions.

✂️Create your own fantastic creature collages using photos of our historic museum specimens.

⏰Sessions will run from 1-3pm on Monday 6 July, Wednesday 8 July and Friday 10 July. No bookings required, just come and join in!

👩‍🎨The activity is suitable for all ages, however kids under 10 will need adult supervision.

Join the The Friends of the Burke Museum Inc. for a special afternoon exploring the fascinating horticultural story of the historic Mayday Hills gardens with guest speaker Col Gladstone, former head gardener at Mayday Hills.

🛑 Due to a planned all-day power outage on Friday 10 April, the Beechworth Historic Courthouse, Burke Museum and Telegraph Station will be closed.

⚡️ Walking Tours are also cancelled, so to hear about Harry Power (pictured) on our Ned Kelly tour you’ll need to wait until Saturday… there will be no power of any kind in the precinct tomorrow 😉

ℹ️ Beechworth Visitor Information Centre will be open 9.30am to 4pm for your tourist info needs.

⏰ We’ll be back to business as usual on Saturday, hope to see you then! 👌

We’re excited to see Beechworth Biennale artworks being installed today in both the Gold Sub Treasury on Ford Street, the Stone Lock Up and the Powder Magazine!

Katheryn Leopoldseder’s ‘Drawing Out The Gold’, a site-specific installation including precious metals, is installed in the very place where millions of ounces gold were processed during Beechworth’s gold rush.

Drew Pettifer’s audio-visual installation ‘Incidental Contact’ in the Stone Lock Up explores ideas including masculinity, in a place of historical brutality.

In the atmospheric Powder Magazine, Vestigial Liminal, musicians Matthew McKenzie, Liam Cuffley and Richard Iskov, are installing an experimental soundscape titled ‘Gloaming’. The artwork will will play on a loop throughout the weekend, but will also feature a live performance at 8pm Sunday night.

COLLECTION HIGHLIGHT: The Gang-gang Cockatoo 🦜

A charismatic Beechworth local, Gang-gangs are hard to miss—both in their distinctive appearance and their signature “creaky gate” call that echoes through our forests. 📣

But these beauties aren’t just a sight to behold—they’re a species under threat. Known for preferring cool, wooded mountain ranges, Gang-gangs are particularly vulnerable to climate change, suffering extensive habitat loss from both bushfires and deforestation. 🌍🔥

By continuing to showcase species like the Gang-gang through our historic taxidermy collection, we can try to raise awareness in hope of hearing their calls echoing through our region for generations to come! ❤️

👀 This Gang-gang Cockatoo specimen is part of a collection of nearly 200 specimens—originally acquired as skins from museums across Australia—including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (Museums Victoria). The skins were mounted by the Burke Museum Committee in the 19th century, and the resulting specimens highlight a long history of scientific collecting for public education. 📚
